Hearers of the Constant Hum (Horror)
2 chapters   —   updated May 13, 2015 06:39PM
Description: Bill Krang records insect conversations onto cassette tapes and labels them THE CONSTANT HUM. Others cannot hear insects in the same way, so he has dedicated his life to discovering how to share their message with others. Ashok burn right hand of men. To Neptune, rebirth in blue fire. Years pass and now Krang notices the peculiar phrase graffitied on the sides of buildings and written on mysterious tiles half-buried in asphalt. What does it mean? Are the insects trying to warn him? Is it a threat? Are there other hearers of the constant hum? Where are they? In his search for answers, he manages to dismantle all he ever thought he knew about everything. Can you hear it?

William Pauley III

“Now, please, if I could direct your attention to the tip of this pen. Notice that it does not look like a normal pen. It is in fact a tooth of the Devil! And it will be injecting into your skin, not ink, but the blood of a demon!”
William Pauley III, Toe Tags

“I am a confused animal who fears the idea of progress, not because I do not wish to progress, but because I fear how those in control define progress.”

“This is not for you.”
Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves

“Who has never killed an hour? Not casually or without thought, but carefully: a premeditated murder of minutes. The violence comes from a combination of giving up, not caring, and a resignation that getting past it is all you can hope to accomplish. So you kill the hour. You do not work, you do not read, you do not daydream. If you sleep it is not because you need to sleep. And when at last it is over, there is no evidence: no weapon, no blood, and no body. The only clue might be the shadows beneath your eyes or a terribly thin line near the corner of your mouth indicating something has been suffered, that in the privacy of your life you have lost something and the loss is too empty to share.”
Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves

“And you walk or wheel to this place here when you feel sad? On your walks? Or wheels? This is a sad place. More sadder it could turn you.”
Andersen Prunty, Zerostrata

“Quit hogging the Cheetos, you stupid fuck.”

Arnez Hey man, which of your books do you recommend me to start with?! I love bizarro and would like your craziest one!

message 2: by C. D.

C. D. Ward Thanks for the add, Mr. Pauley.

Do you plan on having any more collaborations with Mr. Barnett? I've read both anthologies that you two put out and loved them.
