I believe in frustration and self-doubt, things that can make me pause from sitting down to do the work, but I don't believe in "writer's block". I try to remember what Hemingway said: I'm paraphrasing, but it's something like, Always make sure you stop writing while you still have something to say. Save something for the next day. I also get a lot of ideas in the shower or when I'm walking. Oftentimes if I'm not sure what to write, I'll realize that I need to do more research, and I'll go that route. (less)

The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors (Literature & Fiction)
1 chapters   —   updated Feb 18, 2010 07:40AM
Description: Damaged people inhabit this debut novel: people who have been struck by lightning as well as those who have lost loved ones from death, divorce, drinking, or duplicity. Young-Stone tells parallel stories that hurdle storm after storm headlong into one another... [She] is a very fine writer who has created a host of endearing losers—young, old, literate, and simple, all full of longing. What she does best is portray the incredulousness of the unlucky. (Apr.) If you enjoy mythic tales of native islanders, those mixed-blood inhabitants of islands who lost their mixed roots, sand and hearts to American tourism, this is a must-read for you. The story was a page turner. Oftentimes, I had trouble putting it do...more

“She'd been in love with the man, and love is a scary thing. If not reciprocated, it can turn a person into a monster.”
Michele Young-Stone, The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors

“... and people who have kids, people with husbands and jobs and mortgages, don't much want to hear about other people's paintings.”
Michele Young-Stone, The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors

“It's sad how things devolve, how if you hear just the early part of Freddie and Veronica's story, this romantic romp between a blue-eyed guitarist and knobby-knuckled songstress, you imagine they'll go on forever.”
Michele Young-Stone, Above Us Only Sky: A Novel

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Ernest Hemingway

“If you tell a beautiful woman that she is beautiful, what have you given her? It's no more than a fact and it has cost you nothing. But if you tell an ugly woman that she is beautiful, you offer her the great homage of corrupting the concept of beauty. To love a woman for her virtues is meaningless. She's earned it, it's a payment, not a gift. But to love her for her vices is a real gift, unearned and undeserved. To love her for her vices is to defile all virtue for her sake - and that is a real tribute of love, because you sacrifice your conscience, your reason, your integrity and your invaluable self-esteem.”
Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

“You cannot save people. You can only love them.”
Anaïs Nin

“Had I not created my whole world, I would certainly have died in other people’s. ”
Anaïs Nin

“Writing is like making love. Don't worry about the orgasm, just concentrate on the process.”
Isabel Allende
