Women were scare enough in the West of the late nineteenth century, and a middle-aged English lady traveling alone, by horseback, was a real phenomenon. But Isabella Bird was already a confirmed world traveler, mostly alone adn, she said, 'for recreation and interest solely," although her later efforts in providing medical care and hospitals in many Near and Far Eastern countries belie that statement.

It was during the autumn and early winter of 1873 that she made this extended tour of the Rocky Mountain area of Colorado, when she was on her way back to England from the Sandwich Islands. What she called "no region for tourists and women" is today a popular resort, though the back trails retain their inaccessibility and wild aspects.

She climbed Longs Peak, then traveled through Estes Park, the mining areas, on down Boulder Canyon to Longmont, through the Big Thompson and St. Vrain canyons, and then on to Denver. Wearing Hawaiian dress and mounted on "Birdie," her borrowed pony, she was guided by desperado Mountain Jim, who entertained her with recitations of poetry and cultivated conversation. She stayed in mountain cabins, viewed a world of lance committees, lynchings, and desperadoes quick on the trigger, and noted everywhere that improbably combination of opposites which was the American West.

The story of her Rocky Mountain adventure, first published in a genteel British weekly in 1878, is told through her letters to her sister. Published in book form in England in 1879, it went through eight editions in England and the United States between thenand 1894.

Nothing is more impressive in this vivid account than Isabella Bird's feeling for the nuance and variety of mountain life. Here is indeed a a rare woman's-eye-view of the life and manners and the difficulties and beauties of the unspoiled West that will appeal to women and men alike.

Volume 14 in the great Western Frontier Library..

This classic travel book details Isabella Bird's 1878 trip, where she set out alone to explore the interior of Japan - a rarity not only because of Bird's sex but because the country was virtually unknown to Westerners. The Japan she describes is not the sentimental world of Madame Butterfly but a vibrant land of real people with a complex culture and hardscrabble lives.

Endlessly restless and endlessly curious, Isabella Bird travelled the world looking for new experiences, but never more delightfully than in her pony-bound adventures in the Colorado Territory at a time when it was only notionally under the control of the American authorities. A vanished world of grizzly hunters, cowboys, isolated cabins and plagues of rattlesnakes is here beautifully brought back to life.
