There is a chapter toward the end of the book in which Elizabeth asks him what "set" him off, i.e., attracted him to her, in the first place? "--my behaviour to you was at least always bordering on the uncivil," she says, "and I never spoke to you without rather wishing to give you pain than not. Now, be sincere; did you admire me for my impertinence?" His answer is priceless. "For the liveliness of your mind, I did." Their relationship is very modern considering the time.(less)
M.J. Roë I read. Always triggers a thought that gets me going again.

I loved the movie. That said, this novel differs some from the film story, yet it is also compelling. I can see why Hollywood wanted it, but I liked better what the scriptwriter did.

“It is a delicious thing to write, to be no longer yourself but to move in an entire universe of your own creating. Today, for instance, as man and woman, both lover and mistress, I rode in a forest on an autumn afternoon under the yellow leaves, and I was also the horses, the leaves, the wind, the words my people uttered, even the red sun that made them almost close their love-drowned eyes.”
