Sarah Dessen's Blog, page 40

May 2, 2010

It's Sunday afternoon, and I just returned from my second trip to the grocery store today. Yes, you read that right: second. I don't know when it happened, but somehow I have become someone who is always having to stop to pick up something for dinner, or a missing ingredient, or something crucial that cannot wait until tomorrow and yet I still somehow forgot the day before when I was at the same place. (I have also become that person who forgets the diaper/snack bag while in store, and has to...

1. I swear, I have got to find a time to blog when my brain is functioning. I gave up posting in the morning, because the mornings are total chaos. But trying to do it right now, after writing for two solid hours, isn't great either. I mean, when I'm really working, it's like my brain runs on the treadmill and sweats HARD: the last thing I can do after is go for a power walk. See how terrible that metaphor was? Or maybe it was a simile. All right, that's it. I'm going to have to start waking ...

I'm interrupting my normal blogging schedule to share with you the single best thing I have seen all freaking day. Maybe all freaking week.

I mean, come on! If that doesn't give you hope that even in the worst of times there is a glimmer, an open window, whatever you want to believe in specifically, I don't know what does. Look at that baby's face! It's so serene, like, don't worry. We're okay. Oh, my god, I can't even look at it without getting choked up. And no, I'm not hormonal. Just a tot...

Even before I had a kid, I thought that being a stay at home parent had to be the hardest job in the world. Now that I've been enduring various babysitter crises and having to do the full-time Mom thing for the last couple of days, I know it for SURE. Whoa. At one point this afternoon, at the sandbox, when I was seeing double I was so tired, head reeling from everything I have to do workwise that just Will Not Get Done Today, all I could think about were my friends and cousins who have been d...

This weekend, I found myself living vicariously through other YA authors. Meg Cabot rocked the LA Times Festival of Books and nearby signings in pretty much the cutest outfit EVER, carrying the cutest purse ever. Plus, look at these shoes. I'm so jealous!

(courtesy of Meg's blog)

Then, Laurie Halse Anderson ran a half marathon in Central Park. Amazing! And I....well, I dealt with various babysitter issues, saw my daughter through either bad allergies or a bad cold, and worried about Bret Mich...

1. Okay, so how GREAT was the Madonna Glee episode this week? I didn't get to watch it until last night, but once it began I was, like, totally lost in nostalgia. That's one of the bonuses of being a teenager when Madonna was first breaking out: I feel like I grew up with her. Also, since I am from the original MTV generation, I can remember every video for every song. So when "Like A Virgin" came on I was like, "Remember the lion?" and when they did "Borderline" I said, "Remember when she sp...

April 20, 2010

It's Tuesday afternoon, and I'm just finished a REALLY long work day, which means I have exactly, like, two brains cells still functioning. To me, a good day of hard writing and/or revising is like an intense workout. You (i.e. me) always procrastinate a bit, dread starting, but then get lost in it and feel SO good when you're done. Plus, there's the same kind of good tired feeling you get after a good run. Which is different from bad tired you get when, say, your toddler is up at 3:30 am for...

Earth Day is this week, and in honor of the occasion, they were giving away a free reusable shopping bag at Target today. I know, I know. One bag is not that big of a deal. But while I try to be as green as I can, I have to say the One Big Change I've made in the last few years is that I bring my own bags everywhere, and the habit started a few Earth Days ago, when Whole Foods gave me a free bag and stopped using plastic ones. For awhile, I struggled with remembering them (note to self: bag i...

1. Today is Tax Day, but it's just not like it used to be. Remember when you used to have to go pick up your forms at the post office, and then sit down and fill them out with your calculator, then go stand in line to make SURE they were postmarked by the 15th? Well, you used to have to do all that. Now, between internet and Turbo Tax, it's a much different ball game. It's still not a fun thing, though, especially when you have to wrap your mind around what you owe or have already paid. Perso...

April 13, 2010

Thanks to all of you who sent positive thoughts to my mom for her surgery. I was a nervous wreck on Monday---however, I am usually a nervous wreck, despite the circumstances---but everything went well, and she's now recuperating and resting comfortably. I went up to visit her today, and while I KNOW hospitals are healing places, I just feel like I've spent more than enough time at this particular one in the last few years. I mean, add it up: my mom got really sick before my daughter was born,...
