The deadline has passed for those in Australia, and a few more entries have come in. I’ll put these up, and then I’m going to think about them for a few days. Picking a winner (or two) is not going to be easy! But I’ll get there – and I’ll probably announce the winner next...

White Cat by Holly Black
I really enjoyed this, once I got into it. It took a while, mainly because the magic is rather obscure. But it was worth persevering. I'm looking forward to the next one.
White Cat by Holly Black
" Tatiana wins! I love this book WAY better than Tithe. 4.5 stars (I am deducting half a star for predictability, but I was almost so engrossed that I didn't care).

Will keep an eye out for #2. Also highly intrigued by the very brief mention of Kosch... " Read more of this review »

Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett
This is one of those books that stayed with me for days after I finished it. It's slight, but intensely moving - a story of two boys trapped with a violent father, and the gradual unraveling of what really happened on the night things fell apart. The...more

A Curtain Falls by Stefanie Pintoff
Didn't finish it. I usually like historical crime fiction, but with this one I found the characters uninteresting and unconvincing. Nothing to keep me reading.

A Death in the Venetian Quarter by Alan Gordon
This book had all the ingredients to be utterly wonderful, and I started off thinking it was going to be. Great beginning, original idea, a gorgeous mix of historical fact and fiction, wit and humour and the fascinating city of Constantinople. And ye...more

The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb
Good to see Hobb back in fine form after the disappointment of the Soldier Son trilogy. This new series is shaping up to be a good one, with both human and dragon characters to barrack for.

The Night Ferry by Michael Robotham
The Night Ferry
by Michael Robotham (Goodreads Author)
I wasn't mad about the writing, but it was the main character that killed this book for me after no more than four chapters. I just didn't believe in her. I didn't believe her reactions to things or to people. Eventually I skipped to the end to see i...more

Folly by Laurie R. King
Folly
by Laurie R. King (Goodreads Author)
This book pairs with 'Keeping Watch', and I've just reread both of them. I think King does some of her best writing in these two books. They're not easy reads - she's dealing with mental illness and trauma and loss and recovery, but they are deeply a...more

Garment of Shadows by Laurie R. King
Three and a half stars. I do love this series, but it must be very hard to live up to the brilliance of the first three books, and I think that's beginning to show. 'Pirate King' was a disappointment, and 'Garment of Shadows' is a LOT better, but I t...more

“Goldie closed her eyes and tried not to think about how she had nearly died, waiting for someone to come along and save her. She shivered. 'I'll never do that again,' she thought. 'Next time I'll save myself.”
Lian Tanner, Museum of Thieves

“Don't try to push [fear] away,' he said. 'If you fight it, you make it stronger. You gotta great it politely, like an unwanted cousin. You can't make it leave you alone, but you can do what you have to do, in spite of it.”

Lian Tanner Georgina, your daughter is a fast reader! I'm so glad you both enjoyed the book. I don't know if you are anywhere near either Hobart or Launceston, but if you are, you might like to come to one of the launches of Book 3, which will be out shortly. Georgina Taylor Thank you for accepting my friend request, Lian. My daughter brought The Keepers home from school yesterday. She finished it last night and I'm reading it now. Really enjoying it! We are both very impressed. :):)
