<about>Publius Cornelius Tacitus born A.D. c. 55 and died c. 120
About the year 80, Tacitus published his Dialogus de oratoribus, which enquired about the causes of the decline in Roman oratory, and assessed its future prospects. In 98, he made available essays on his father-in-law (the Agicola, which has much to say concerning Britain), and on the Germani tribespeople (the Germania), ruefully respected as an untamed, uncorrupted adversary of the decadent Romans. For Tacitus had observed the terrible last years of Domitian, and it was this experience more than any other that was to influence the historian in his future writings. He was governor of 'Asia' (Western Anatolia, in modern Turkey) in 112 for just under two years. A famed orator, his Annals and Histories covered the period from 14 to 96, but neither work survives in its entirety.</about> <gender>male</gender>
