About this author

Now based in rural West Wales, R. S. Pyne is a freelance science writer/geoscience researcher with a PhD in Micropalaeontology from the University of Aberystwyth. She used to be an Iron Age Celt (not in a previous life; as a member of Prytani - The Iron Age Celtic reenactment society)and has a good appreciation of the weaponry of this period. Getting hit in the face repeatedly with a shield boss tends to do this to people and perhaps explains a lot. Non writing interests include growing carnivorous plants and orchids, Muay Thai kickboxing and cryptozoology

If all else fails, I take my dogs for a walk in the woods and watch the red kites and the ravens. Sometimes, I think writer's block is the mind telling you to take a break.(less)

Work on a darker fantasy series is progressing well and a historical horror novella is currently with a beta reader.

I have also been very busy with my post-doctoral research. This month, a research paper on the Quaternary Ecostratigraphy of the Somerset Levels will be submitted to an international peer reviewed journal.(less)

Reading Roald Dahl's The Twits (Y Twits)in Welsh. Just about finished now and ready to start "Bywyd Blodwen Jones" by Bethan Gwanas. Reading fiction in another language is challenging but it is a good way to learn. I wrote a short story in Welsh a few months ago - <2000 words but it took me longer than a 12k one in English!

This was a bit of a let down compared to Cornwell's wonderful Sharpe and Warlord Chronicles - the writing also varied in quality and felt rushed at times.

This the only book that has ever given me nightmares! Re-reading 'It' has confirmed my serious clown phobia and the book is even worse than the film version. Films show in graphic detail but books leave it all to the imagination. The next time you pa ...more
