Contemporary Romance Adventure TURTLE SOUP has received a fantastic review at the Long and Short of It reviews. Who can resist a dose of comfort food and a beautiful man with a heart of gold to top it off?

Sea turtles may be endangered but after an encounter with marine biologist, Jack Brandon, nothing will stop Sara Hart from naming her deli Turtle Soup. When Jack takes a job at the nearby Georgia Aquarium, Sara finds the environmental poster boy at her door, hungry and carrying a chip on his shoulder. Neither thinks the other has what it takes, until a scuba class reveals what lies beneath the surface.

“Jack Brandon, who might be just a tad rough around the edges, proves the value of his heart straightaway when author Danielle Thorne reveals his career choice: devoted to endangered sea turtles. Sadly, our heroine, the Entrepreneurial Sara doesn’t experience any of Jack’s finer points when she bumps into him… and in fact, still smarting from the altercation, she names her brand-new deli Turtle Soup.”

Being as I have to balance a budget as well as my writing life, I attended a class recently about clipping coupons. Sounds rather elementary, I suppose. Clip a few coupons for breakfast cereal and save a few cents, right? Wrong!

Coupon clipping has become a fine art in this electronic day and age, and some of the coupon experts out there are putting scrapbookers to shame. My instructor had a stack of three large notebooks filled with page protectors and hundreds upon hundreds of slips of paper. There were even store receipts for proof. Shockingly, a pro coupon clipper can actually save more money than is spent, and in some cases get money back!

One of the most interesting things I learned was that it’s possible to use two coupons for one item, as long as one is a manufacturer’s coupon and the other is a store coupon. If that item is on sale, you can sometimes save so much money they have to give you a few pennies back. Crazy stuff!

I decided to give this a go. Luckily, there are a few stores who still double coupons, so I tackled one popular chain first, targeting their weekly Buy One Get One Free list with my coupons. I saved a lot of money, but still spent more than I wanted. Interestingly enough, the groceries lasted me two weeks. The draw back: There was a lot of high calorie junk food and frozen foods.

Week 2 I did much better at popular fancy chain’s Buy One Get One. I spent $58 and saved $58. However, I still had to go to another store where I buy my meats and produce.

It’s coming along. I’m now a devout printer of internet coupons. Even though they can’t be doubled, everyone takes them, so why not? I have found the best sites to be Coupons.com and Southernsavers.com. I clip everything out of my newspaper and have now started clipping coupons on mailings and the back of my store receipts. Who would have thought holding a pair of scissors could be so addicting?

As the economic atmosphere in our country turns toward frugality, I’m thankful I attended a simple evening class about saving. I thought I was pretty thrifty, but you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. I look forward to finding more ways to make life easier. Now, if I could only find more ways to save time!

Hi Authors:

I am co-chairing Epic’s 2010 New Voices young writers’ competition this year with Marci Baun from Wild Child publishing. New Voices is a chance for young authors to enter a free competition and win; there are prizes and a chance to be published in an anthology.

You need guest bloggers to keep your blog interesting. We need guest blog dates to spread the word about New Voices. I would be happy to write up an informative piece or be interviewed for your blog anytime this September.

We have a new website under construction that will be ready soon. There are informative brochures and guidelines that can be downloaded, not to mention, a smart new logo. Contact me before my calendar is full!

Poop Deck:
Is TWITTER worth it? Marketing experts assure us <authors > that we need a strong web presence and TWITTER is the way to go. Some feel it’s just another social networking site that wastes valuable time. Others feel it’s a world of constant chatter with no one listening. IS anybody out there? I am closing on two months as a Twitter and I have seen some results, though I’m not ready to abandon all other ships. Besides a few friendly contacts and new *friends*, my personal website hits have increased 30-40% but the numbers still vary according to what else I have going on around the web.
Crow’s Nest Review:
Title: IT’S ELEMENTARY, DEAR WINIFRED
Author: Miss Mae
Publisher: Class Act Books
Winifred Merryweather finds herself kidnapped and forced to confront a mysterious castle full of horrors. But she’s not alone. Her one hope, the equally clever Remington Hawthorne, is a newspaper reporter who insists he just as much a victim in this theatrical adventure.
You know how every now and then you come across one of those great reads that gets you excited? I had no idea what to expect when I started Miss Mae’s new release which she graciously awarded me in a guest blog contest. I have one word for the author: Wow.
Dear Winifred is a horseless carriage from page one. My head was spinning by the third chapter and I couldn’t stop. Talk about a Victorian fun house: revolving rooms, trick mirrors, and trapdoors, with a cast of characters cleverly plopped onto your Adventure Sundae scoop by scoop. Tie-in Sherlock Holmes and his notorious adversary, Dr. Moriarty, and you have a big red cherry on top.
Miss Mae, I’m so impressed. You do everything right. The premise is exuberantly original and the plot is so well unwound, I stand amazed. I rarely muse on sequels but I must insist you carry on the good work. I can’t wait to see what you can cook up for Winifred and her new beau.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Powder Flasks [You’re the Bomb!:]
Galley:
Blueberry Crunch Cake
1 can of blueberry pie filling
1 small can of crushed pineapple, drained
1 box of yellow cake mix
1 stick of butter, melted
1 cup of chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease a 9X13 pan. Layer blueberry pie filling, pineapple, and dry cake mix powder. Drizzle over melted butter then sprinkle over nuts. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until lightly browned.
Powder Keg:
How do you feel about authors having other authors (they personally know) review their books? Have you ever asked a close friend for a review? Do you think there is anything wrong with that? Why or why not?
Abaft the Beam:
DID YOU KNOW? When rations ran low, sailors ate anything they could get their hands on. Sea turtles were considered a delicacy (Turtle soup, anyone?) and even dolphins did not escape the grim fate. Such ideas may turn a modern mariner’s stomach but consider eating nothing but dry, salted beef and weevil-ridden hard biscuit for a year at a time.

Thanks for signing on, Mates.
See you next voyage!
