Synopsis: This picture book explores customs and courtesies of military culture through a child's eyes. Author Mary Lee takes your child along with her fictional character Susie on a journey of discovery. From military uniforms through a military child's 'rite of passage' full circle to Susie's development of a sense of pride and patriotism in our country. My Air Force Mom shows children that the military offers careers to women as well as men. It gives military moms and dads a book to help their young children begin to understand military life. My Air Force Mom gives civilian parents a tool to explain mysteries of military life to their children.
Overall thoughts: A winner in the Children’s Fiction Category of the 73rd Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Contest, this fun book does an excellent job of explaining the military life to children. I really liked how it was written from the view point of the daughter, and that it was about her mom – another fantastic reminder to all that girls proudly serve in the military. The author was able to capture the pride the daughter has for her mom’s occupation, and the excitement she feels for being a part of the military community.

Synopsis: Milo sets out to find a best friend. He asks Andy the ant, Copy the cat, Bonnie the blue jay, Betty the bee, Freddy the frog, Mach the mole, Benny the bunny, Tommy the tiger, Frank the fish, Pete the pig, and Harriett the horse to be his friend, but they all refused. Milo was devastated and hurt. Finally he asks God to help him in his distress. And God gives him a wonderful answer, one that will soothe and comfort him forever.
Overall thoughts: This is a wonderful book with a great lesson. It is a great way of introducing the concept of God to children. Umina shows that it is possible to talk to God and to have a close relationship with him. God is always there for us like no one else. And He could be there as our best friend. All we have to do is reach out to Him. What a great message for kids.(less)

Synopsis: Cormey’s book is way too cute. The rhythmical quality of the book is like no other I have ever read. Foot is a wonderful rabbit that has a very different name. His friends tend to have rather ordinary names, such as Fluffy, Bunny O’Hare, Carrot Top, and Big Ears Ernie. They just all hop around in pairs. But Foot’s best friends are his brothers, whom he has named, Foot-Foot, and Foot-Foot-Foot. They love to play and hop together. But they also sing together. Then three mean hunters with big guns come to the briar patch. What will happen to the brothers? You must read the book to find out!
There is also an important take away message in the book, and this is the emphasis on the relationship of the brothers. These siblings sing together and have fun. So, siblings can get along and they can be best friends to each other. I love this take away message because many times brothers tend not to get along.
Overall thoughts: I absolutely love this book. The illustrations are super cute and funny. Any child will chuckle when (s)he reads the book. The book comes with a CD and DVD and because of the catchy tune of the song, kids of all ages will be humming the song a lot, I would expect.
I will be reading the book to all of my nieces and nephews. I already read the book to one of my nieces and she just fell in love with it. When I asked her what she loved most about the book she said that she loved the names of the rabbits and how they sang. Ever since she listened to the CD that came with the book, she has been humming and singing the song over and over again. This has not only frustrated her brother but he now wants to read it too! How wonderful.(less)

Synopsis: Big cats are fierce predators that roam the world from the mountains to the deserts. How are these wild cats that hunt for their food the same as pet cats that might chase a mouse or a ball of yarn? How are they different? This book introduces children to the days of the week as they travel to seven different world habitats to meet the big cats, and then back home to compare and contrast the domestic cat’s behavior to that of its relative.
Overall thoughts: My family has cats on the brain right now, as our mama farm cat just had five kittens in our garage, but we would have enjoyed this book even without the new kitties. The illustrations are vivid and beautiful. The repetition is predictable, but in an excellent way that fully engages the young listener/reader. The included educational activities urge the reader to learn more about the cats and master the key points throughout the book. A lively and fun book!

Synopsis: A little boy and his family spend a relaxing day at the beach until a dragon moves into the boy’s sandcastle. At first, the boy enjoys his new friend. The dragon toasts marshmallows, flies a kite and scares away bullies. Things start to go wrong when the boy tries to convince his family that there is a dragon. No one believes him and he must take the blame for the dragon’s pranks.
Overall thoughts: Jodi Moore’s debut book is a whimsical look at family life and a little boy’s need for attention. The large red dragon, portrayed vividly by Howard McWilliam’s illustrations, is both mischievous and lovable. The reader is left to decide if the dragon is real or only a product of a boy’s vivid imagination. McWilliam’s artwork provides reasonable explanations for the dragon’s antics, if we choose to take them. But perhaps on a warm summer day, it’s more fun to let our imaginations run wild, and believe that if we build a perfect sandcastle, a dragon will move in. Moore has built the perfect story for a child’s imagination to move in.(less)
