About this author

I'm 47 years old, born in the UK. After doing a psychology degree at Durham, and a PhD at London in 1989, I joined BP. My main motivation was travel, and so with BP I worked and lived in Australia, Spain, Portugal and Japan. By 2002 we had 4 children, and decided to settle - emigrating to Australia in 2004. I started writing 'The Sweet Smell of Decay' in 1994 - during our first visit to Australia - and finished it in 2008. Between 1994 and 2008 I learned to write, and completely immersed myself in the history of the period. The sequel to 'Sweet Smell', 'A Plague of Sinners' was published in May 2010.

Good news to those who have enjoyed the first two books in the series (and for me of course!). The 3rd Chronicle of Harry Lytle is due to be published soon!

Titus Oates by Jane Lane
Titus Oates
by Jane Lane
read in July, 2011
History books can be dull and turgid, an impenetrable mass of dates and footnotes. Jane Lane's account of the life of Titus Oates is, by contrast, lively and compelling. Originally published in 1949, Jane's style reminds me of the writings of Samuel...more

A great companion to a book like William Lilly's Christian Anthology. Christian Anthology gives you an insight into the 'what' ... what exactly was it that astrologers did in the 16th & 17th centuries? Pretty much what astrologers do today as it...more

The European Witch Craze of the Sixteenth & Seventeenth Century by Hugh Trevor-Roper
This a short volume, a kind of long essay with chapters, which details very clearly the origins of the witch-hunts of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Sleepers And The Shadows by Hilda E.P. Grieve
Some town histories can be a bit dull. Not so Hilda Grieve's history of Chelmsford which comes, believe it or not, in two volumes. The first volume I bought from a second hand bookshop online, subtitled 'The Medieval & Tudor Story'. The second, m...more

Jo Thanks for the friend request Paul. I actually have a copy of The Sweet Smell of Decay although I haven't read it yet. It does look really good though so I'm looking forward to immersing myself in it.
