About this author

Paul Gleason received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas, where he worked as managing editor of the D.H. Lawrence Review. He has published essays on major modernist and postmodernist writers, including Beckett, DeLillo, Eliot, Joyce, Lawrence, McElroy, Nabokov, and Vollmann. Understanding T.C. Boyle is his first book.

Harbach's novel is standard American realism - nothing to write home about. Some of the sentences are extremely pretty - I can HEAR but not FEEL Updike once in a while - but, the problem is, the plot isn't adventurous and has parts that are laughably...more
