About this author

I'm a children's writer based in Scotland, and most of my fiction is inspired by the Scottish landscape and local legends. I love writing fantasy adventures for 8 - 12 year olds, but I also love creating stories for other age groups. I've written several picture books, including one about bottoms (which I enjoy reading to infant classes!) My most recent book is a beautifully illustrated retelling of Little Red Riding Hood (I can say that because I didn't draw the pictures, Celia Chauffrey did!) I've written retellings of myths for slightly older readers, and a contemporary novella called Drawing a Veil. I've just launched Maze Running, the fourth and final novel in my First Aid for Fairies series, so now I'm looking round eagerly for the ne...more

Here’s the list of questions I’ve been asking myself over the weekend:

Is it true nothing can grow under a holly tree?

Do polar bears roar?

Do reindeer trot?

What do trolls smell like?

When did the Maori first arrive in Aotearoa?

How many pomegranate seeds did Persephone eat?

Do Venezuelans wear ponchos?

What colour are an ibis’s legs?

Do German children put spiders on their Christmas trees?

What was Ana...

This crime novel does exactly what the best crime novels do: it uses the familiar shape of a murder, and the quest for the who and the why of that murder, to give us a glimpse into another world. In The Gods of Gotham, that world is early New York: t...more

Lari Don So I've just added a new book to the list of Books by Lari Don for the first time (my new picture book - Orange Juice Peas) which was quite a thrill! But I've also failed to add a picture of the rather lovely cover, which was a bit of a disappointment. Anyone got any suggestions of how to do that?

Christine Hatfield thanks for being my friend

Lari Don I'm sure if this box is for me to comment on my own page, but it seems like a convenient place to say: I realise that I'm giving either 4 or 5 stars to every book I review. This is NOT because I am incapable of telling a bad book from a good one, nor because I am amazingly expert at picking only excellent books to read, nor even because as an author, I don't want to be rude about other authors. It's because I'm not bothering to put up books on Goodreads that I wouldn't happily recommend to my best friend! So, if it's here and I've given it 4 or 5 stars, it's because I loved it. You can't see the pile of books by my bed which I'm not telling you about!
