Dear Readers,
So many of you have asked me why I didn't use quotation marks in THOSE WHO SAVE US that I figured I'd finally clear up the mystery.  (The first time somebody asked this was at a large reading and I said, "Oh no--I forgot to put in quotes?" I thought that was hilarious.)
My policy is, there had better be a danged good reason behind everything you do as a writer, especially if it's unusual.  If you're employing some unorthodox authorial conceit such as not using quotation marks, you ri

Dear Readers,
I have to open this post with the New York Times Bestseller watch:  THOSE WHO SAVE US is # 21 for the week of Feb. 10!
If you are casting about for the perfect Super Bowl gift, or Presidents' Day gift, or Valentine's Day gift (okay, for your mom, or your friend's mom, or your sadistic ex-boyfriend..."See, hon, this Nazi?  He reminds me of why we broke up!"), may I offer this suggestion:  THOSE WHO SAVE US.
I've asked everyone I know to buy one more copy of the novel to see if it jumps

Dear Readers,
A little-known fact about me:  in addition to being half Jewish and part German, I'm also Norwegian on my mother's side (so yes, the blonde hair in my author photo is real, I swear!).  Recently, when my book sold in Norway, DAMM, my Norwegian publisher, asked me to find out what I could about my background there.
I know some things about being Norwegian very well.  My Minnesota relatives all have the snowflake sweaters and speak with that lilt--Ya, you betcha then.  My grandparents a

Dear Readers,
Happy New Year!
I am thrilled to announce that THOSE WHO SAVE US is starting 2008 at # 22 on the New York Times paperback Bestseller List.
The novel has enjoyed a strong presence on the venerable List since October 2007, sometimes dipping into the 30s but mostly hanging in there around the mid-20s.
Now it's back where it started on Oct. 7:  # 22.  (Only two slots from visibility on the paper's printed Sunday page.)
Every week we hold our breath around my house until our THOSE WHO SAVE

Dear Readers,
While I was working on THOSE WHO SAVE US and was blocked, I'd often take long walks by the Charles River and imagine whom I'd cast in the movie version....what scene would be shown at the Oscars....what I'd wear to the Oscars when I was nominated for Best Screenplay Adaptation....  (Well, a girl has to dream, doesn't she?)
In my last post, I asked for your casting suggestions.  Here are the top choices:
Gerhard (Anna's father):  Donald SutherlandJack:  Harrison Ford (okay, maybe the H
