About this author

Lynda Fitzgerald currently lives and writes in Snellville, Georgia, a small town just east of Atlanta, but she hails from Central Florida, where she spent most of her formative years. Florida still holds a special place in her heart, and you can see that influence reflected in her writing. Her recent novel, If Truth Be Told, was set in that location, as is LIVE Ringer and its sequels. She studied creative writing at both Georgia Perimeter College, where she was awarded a Creative Writing Scholarship, and through Emory University. Lynda is an Active member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, the Atlanta Writers Club and the Florida Writers Association.

Lynda Fitzgerald This is one of my favorite questions to answer. You've heard it all before, but maybe one more time will do the trick.

This is one of my favorite questions to answer. You've heard it all before, but maybe one more time will do the trick.

First, write. Write some more and write some more. You learn to write by writing, with a little help from my second tip.

Second, Refine your skill. Read everything you can on the craft of writing. Take classes as your time and budget will allow. Online courses are excellent. A writer never finishes learning to write. I think it takes many lifetimes to hone the craft, and then new stuff will come along. When you want to read some fiction, read like a writer. Practice becoming aware of what works and what doesn't and why. Read in and outside your genre. Learning to write does not have a "graduation" day. We're all still learning.

Third, and most important of all. Never quit. No matter how bad you decide you are, no matter how many rejections you get, no matter how discouraged you get, don't give up. That's what does in most writers, but no matter. Those folks aren't really writers. Real writers couldn't give up if they wanted to.

Fourth. If you're in it for the money, get out. You may make a fortune; you may not. But if you're writing with an eye always to making a bundle, you're writing shit. Your motivation is clearly evident in every word you put on a page.

If you're writing because you want to touch someone with your story, or if you know it's a story that has to be told or a story that you have to tell, it, too, will be evident on every page of your work.

And Fifth, of course. Don't quit. Oh, did I say that before? Well, it bears repeating. Don't quit.(less)

I attended Book 'em NC, a huge push for literacy in Lumberton, North Carolina. Guess who I met? One of my thriller/author heroes, Michael Palmer, and his author son, Daniel. The entire event was wonderful, but I think one of the hightlights was a duet played and sung by Michael and Daniel that had me choking on laughter, followed by Michael's upbeat keynote address.

If you haven't read their boo... Read more of this blog post »

Of Words & Music (Literature & Fiction)
1 chapters   —   updated Apr 20, 2012 12:34PM
Description: Lilah Kimball, a sixty-year-old widow, has pretty much given up on life. Bethany Freemont is Lilah’s twelve-year-old granddaughter with most of her life ahead of her. The two have never met. Then a tragic accident orphans Bethany, and Lilah is forced to take the child into her home, at least temporarily. Lilah and Bethany are at odds from day one, incapable of exchanging words without conflict. Lilah thinks the child impertinent; Bethany thinks her grandmother is cold and mean. Lilah’s son, a middle-aged accountant, is horrified that his mother would entertain the idea of raising the child, but Lilah’s long-time friend and housekeeper believes Bethany may be Lilah’s last chance at life. As weeks pass, Lilah begins to see herself—and her life— through Bethany’s eyes, and she doesn't like what she sees. Bethany begins to suspect her grandmother may not be the witch she once thought her. Then startling information comes to light that threatens to destroy all they’re trying to build. Of Words & Music is the story of two women divided by more than their ages, but by a lifetime of misunderstanding. It is a story of family love and loss—and renewal.
LIVE Ammo (Mystery & Thrillers)
1 chapters   —   updated Apr 20, 2012 12:18PM
Description: Sheriff Cord Arbutten's wife is dead, an apparent suicide, but his grown son claims she was murdered―by the Sheriff. Investigative reporter Allie Grainger gets involved when her best friend Sheryl, a Sheriff's Deputy, begs her to help. Repeated clashes with the Sheriff's son only make Allie more determined to discover the truth. Rand sets out to block Allie at every turn. When anger doesn't work, he turns on the charm, charm that gets to Allie a lot more than she's willing to admit. Sidney Finch, a Deputy who idolizes the Sheriff, doesn't use charm to impede her investigation. He uses naked threats. Allie has to ask herself who he's trying to protect--the Sheriff or himself? She isn't sure how far Sidney will go to stop her, but since he has a hair-trigger temper and carries a gun, she absolutely doesn't want to find out. Then Rand Arbutten agrees to work with Allie instead of against her. She isn't sure of his motives, but she'll take any help she can get. With her dead aunt whispering encouragement in her ear and Sheryl egging her on, Allie sets out to discover what really happened the day Jean Arbutten died.

LIVE Ringer begins when Allie inherits her aunt's beach house in Cape Canaveral, Florida. All she wants to do is mourn her aunt's passing and her recent divorce, but before twenty-four hours elapses, she finds herself knee-deep in salt water and murder.
If Truth Be Told (Romance)

Description: "IF TRUTH BE TOLD is an incredibly written fictional story. The author, Lynda Fitzgerald, incorporates romance, suspense and mystery into an excellent plot. Because there are no slow moments in the story, I had a hard time putting it down. If Truth Be Told really touched my heart. Not having Ms. Fitzgerald's talent for words, I cannot give this book the kind of review that it best deserves; I can only tell you that you should not miss out on the chance to read it. This is a great choice for a women's reader group." --ReaderViews

Lynda Thanks, Sunny. I'll definitely check it out. I'd love to meet you finally.

Sunny Lynda, I see you have "Howdunit" on your booklist. Don't know if you have heard of the Public Safety Writers Association, but we used to be Police Writers. Just had our annual conference in Vegas. You can check the group out at You Tube (put in PSWA Convention) and an article on Women of Mystery

Just thought I'd put that bug in your ear. I'm a regular presenter.
