Six years in the making--with unprecedented access to Nancy Reagan and the couples closest friends--here is the first volume in the definitive portrait of the remarkable, career-building partnership between Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis. Celebrity insider and Vanity Fair special correspondent Bob Colacello reveals the social history of Ronald and Nancy Reagan as no one ever has before, from the formation of their unique alliance through their rise to the heights of power. Colacello exposes facets of their marriage that have always been hidden from public view. Ronald, born into modest circumstances in rural Illinois, and Nancy, raised in a fashionable enclave of Chicago, both learned early on the value and importance of cultivating the right friendships. Over the years, they perfected their social skills into an art form, becoming one of the film industrys most talked-about power couples. But Hollywood was only the beginning....

"The artistic heritage of this place does matter." —David Salle
Julian Schnabel owns a 10-bedroom Stanford White spread in Montauk, and Ross Bleckner has settled into Truman Capote's Sagaponack saltbox. The Hamptons have come a long way since Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner borrowed $5,000 from Peggy Guggenheim to pay for an unheated farmhouse in Springs, but one thing hasn't changed: the East End's allure to America's leading artists. In Studios by the Sea, Vanity Fair correspondent Bob Colacello and photographer Jonathan Becker go inside the renovated barns, split-shingled cottages, and minimalist mansions of the modern-day artist colony that is Long Island's East End.
Larry Rivers, John Chamberlain, April Gornik, Chuck Close, and David Salle are among the 40 prominent painters and sculptors featured in this gossipy, anecdotal book, full of luscious, sunlight-infused images.

Out documents an era at once so close and so far away: the wild, glamorous, disco-and-drugs decade between the end of the Vietnam war and the advent of AIDS, when, in certain parts of Manhattan, every night was party night. As the editor of Andy Warhol's Interview from 1971 to 1983, Bob Colacello was perfectly placed to record this life of art openings, movie premieres, cocktail parties, dinner parties, charity balls and after-hours clubs; he wrote about the best of them in a monthly column called "Out." In 1975, Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann gave Colacello one of the first miniature 35mm cameras, a black plastic Minox small enough to hide in his jacket pocket, and Colacello began snapping photographs too. Sneaking a shot of Henry Kissinger holding forth at a dinner party, or Bianca Jagger letting loose at Studio 54, Colacello was in the middle of the action, "an accidental photographer" more akin to a secret agent than any typical paparazzo. With their skewed angles, multilayered compositions, and moody lighting, his images have an immediacy and grit not often found in the work of professional party photographers. And what subjects! Diana Vreeland, Calvin Klein, Jack Nicholson, Richard Gere, Cher, Raquel Welch, Mick Jagger, Diane von Furstenberg, Barry Diller, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Nan Kempner, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and always Warhol himself. Because space in Interview was limited, only a handful of Colacello's pictures were published each month. Most of those collected in Out have never been seen before.

Both Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis learned the value of cultivating the right friendships when they were young. Ronnie found his first marriage and political ambitions at irreconcilable odds, but when he met Nancy, one of the most remarkable career-building and romantic partnerships of all time was born. Now comes the definitive portrait of America's First Couple, in a book that is at once a political saga, a social history, and an unforgettable love story. No one is better equipped to chronicle the Reagans' remarkable journey than noted journalist and longtime Vanity Fair writer Bob Colacello. With unprecedented access to Nancy Reagan, her personal papers, and the couple's closest friends-including many who have spoken on the record for the first time-he sheds light on the Reagans' early years and the development of the future president's political ideas. Delving into their Hollywood careers, Ronald Reagan's marriage to actress Jane Wyman, and the Reagans' complicated relationship with their children, Colacello sets the record straight about the most private aspects of their lives.

"There will always be a pre- and a post-Warhol," writes Philippe Tretiack, "and that post-Warhol period is having difficulty establishing itself." There also will always be people who consider Andy Warhol's work to represent the beginning of the end of serious cultural life in America. A flagrantly commercial antihero of the gay, big-city subculture, Warhol offended in so many ways. His cheerful, absurdist pop images of Campbell's soup cans, Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and the electric chair made serious subject matter with serious meaning a thing of the past. Everything Warhol did made serious film, painting, drawing, or printmaking look slightly silly. He flaunted his disregard for the pretensions of the fine artist, calling his studio "the Factory," churning out multiples, and publicly insisting that his work could be fabricated by practically anyone (until it was pointed out to him that this would significantly lower his prices).
In an excellent essay in the front of this small book, Tretiack places Warhol historically and esthetically, hitting all the high points of Warhol's flamboyant career and stylishly discussing the legacy of this '60s bad boy. The rest of the book is full of pictures--mostly Warhol's more famous images, but also some snapshots of Andy. Missing are a few pictures of Warhol's graceful, elegant shoe drawings and recipe illustrations, showing the kind of fine-art facility with which the artist began his career. But the rest is packed in here in all its flashy vainglory, including the green-tinged picture of a smiling Tricky Dick Nixon with the hand-lettered admonishment "Vote McGovern." At the end of the book are a brief chronology and a list of captions for the plates. --Peggy Moorman
