About this author

I'm a thriller and mystery novelist who divides his time between Los Angeles and Southeast Asia, primarily Thailand, where I've has lived off and on for more than twenty years.

My 2010 book, THE QUEEN OF PATPONG, was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel and has just been nominated for the Macavity Award in the same category. My books have been translated into six languages and have made Top Ten and Notable Books list in both North America and Asia.

Available online now are the four books (so far) in my series of Bangkok thrillers and the six books in my Simeon Grist LA private-eye series from the 1990s. (The Grist books are in Kindle at low prices.) Also up for Kindle is my newest series, featuring Junior Bender, a burglar who works...more

I've never been a Wharton fan, and read this book primarily because of a piece about her by Jonathan Lethem in The New Yorker. I'm very happy I did.

One of my problems with Wharton has been that I never feel that she likes her characters; she's a writ...more

One of the great (of many) pleasures of reading Maugham is the effortless perfection of his structure, probably learned in part during his career as a successful playwright. This novel, based on the life of Gauguin (an Englishman in the book, which i...more

This is an interesting book but it's a cautionary example of what can go wrong when a writer sets out to do too much.
