I actually get asked this quite often. I did travel to France and spent a full day at the Chateau Versailles, where the entirety of my first novel, The Courtier's Secret, is set. It really changed the depth and scope of my description of the palace, the 'feel' of it. Unfortunately, that's the extent of my travel...so far. I do, however, read at least five or so books--of all kinds--just on the setting of my stories. Add to that the wonderful experience of virtual tours, and I am able to really absorb the essence of a place as well as its architectural details. I'm pleased that you've found my interpretations entertaining as well as informative. Thanks again! Happy reading!(less)

Weird answer I know. What I mean is this...if I'm stuck on a particular part of a story, I turn to a different scene or chapter. Once I'm able to start the mind moving--the internal pen that drive the fingers on the keyboard--I seem to become easily unstuck...unblocked. If that doesn't work, I turn on some really loud, really good music (alternative rock being my favorite), then sing (badly) and dance (fairly well) around the house. It loosens me up. It takes off the 'pressure.' And the pressure is usually where the true block lies.(less)

Writers and readers – a symbiotic relationship. Ideas spark writers to create stories and build worlds and characters for readers’ consumption. Readers add imagination and thought along with their backgrounds and attitudes to interpret those stories, deriving meaning and enjoyment in the process. A story is incomplete without both writer and reader.
What then do readers want? What constitutes a... Read more of this blog post »
