The book blurb isn't so much a summary as an opening premise. The story develops away from this point. And although SciFi was a very early influence (teens), it was pretty much all Ray Bradbury; I never read Zalazny or P.K.Dick... and 'Devotion' isn't SciFi. So I very much doubt you'd be heading for a similar reading experience. (less)

I believe in writing my way out of trouble. So instead of writing nothing, I might have a long period where nothing I write is useful. That's what I would call 'stuck'. Generally it's because there's something I'm not seeing. I wrestle with it for a few weeks and then I give up. Generally, as soon as I surrender, the answer comes to me. (less)

“We will discover nothing if we bind ourselves to accepted wisdoms. Questioning is necessary for discovery.”
Ros Barber, The Marlowe Papers

“How should words
presume themselves as bandages and slings
when the world limps onward, and you've darkened it?
And words be damned, for if we're 'gentle men'
then what hope does the world have? Words are lost.
They've plucked their eyes out rather than see this,
have jumped from clifftops.”
Ros Barber

“The silence between them thickens. He knows she wants to speak. She is sure, as women often are, that things can be resolved by talking, whereas he is sure that talking will only make them worse.”
Ros Barber, Devotion
