Rosemary Sutcliff was born in a blizzard in East Clandon, Surrey. As a child Sutcliff had Still’s Disease, a form of juvenile arthritis. She spent a lot of time in hospital for painful remedial operations and some of her medications had arsnic. Which caused hallucinations. Her mother read to her very willingly, and Sutcliff did not learn to read until the age of nine. Sutcliff ended her formal education at fourteen. But wrote evry day until the day she dide. During her lifetime Sutcliff wrote over fifty books. |
