About this author

Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway novels take for their inspiration Elly's husband, who gave up a city job to train as an archaeologist, and her aunt who lives on the Norfolk coast and who filled her niece's head with the myths and legends of that area. Elly has two children and lives near Brighton. Though not her first novel, The Crossing Places is her first crime novel.

"I enjoy her writing. Even though this was a murder mystery, it had a sweet tone to it. I'm waiting for the next Ruth Galloway book."
The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths
"Zig Zag Girl from Elly Griffiths is a very different read from her normal fare, I enjoyed this book set in Brighton a crime novel with plenty of twists."

The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths
"I always think it’s a brave decision by an established series author such as Griffiths with her hugely popular Ruth Galloway novels, to step outside of the familiar and tackle a standalone (or opener to a possible new series). I had similar fears..." Read more of this review »

“You know how thick I am. I don't even eat yoghurt because it's got culture in it.”

“When she bought the cats her mother asked her straight out if they were 'baby substitutes'. 'No,' Ruth had answered, straight-faced. 'They're kittens. If I had a baby it would be a cat substitute.”
Elly Griffiths, The Crossing Places

“Maybe humans need animals to help them understand the world. Certainly it’s hard to see what else cats do for humans, aside from looking cute and killing the odd mouse.”
