Wilcomb Washburn earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College and a Ph. D. in the History of American Civilization from Harvard University. Washburn taught History for three years at the College of William and Mary. He then joined the Smithsonian Institution as Curator in the Division of Political History, US National Museum in 1958, eventually becoming Chair of the Department of American Studies. He served as Director of the Smithsonian's Independent American Studies Program from 1968 until his death in 1997.
