An interesting blog, Rosemary. I like the way you've described a novelist as someone who 'reads human nature and puts it into context', and the way we seem to 'inhabit other lives' when writing our books. I, too, am writing my new novel at the moment, and finding that it's sometimes tricky to really get into a character's mind and know what their motivation would be in any given situation, but that's part of the fun of writing, I suppose :)I'm looking forward to reading more of your books soon, as you know I absolutely loved 'What Remains'.
Maria, thank you so much for your comments. I'm glad to know you are busy writing, too. I feel the pressure is on me for the next several months to finish my first draft. To keep motiveated, I visualize the next stage--putting my feet up and revising the manuscript pages, cup of tea or coffee close at hand. Keep me posted on your new project.
Brought back a memory of when I was in High School and had a wonderful creative writing teacher who on one assignment passed out tarot cards. I drew The Fool or Jester. In it I was able to see a person who had the strength to defy conventions and live life on their terms, amongst other attributes. It was interesting listening to everyone's interpretations. That was back in 1976. Good advice, your quote about not using talent. Best wishes with your writings!
