Jaimey Grant's Blog: Into the Mind of Jaimey Grant
May 30, 2012
The following is a crossover post (July 31, 2011) from my Heartless blog:
One of my beta readers questioned why I used miles instead of kilometers in Heartless. Her question actually floored me; it was something I'd never really thought about. I knew miles to be the unit of measurement used during the Regency but I wasn't sure when kilometers came into use in Britain.
So I decided to look it up.
The metric system was created in France in 1790 and adopted by the French government in 1795, though the common people weren't required to use it until 1840. (Strange that they'd be worrying about units of measure in the midst of the French Revolution, but humans ever were odd creatures.) According to Wikipedia, "...the United Kingdom announced its metrication program in 1965..."* This definitely would not allow me to use kilometers in a Regency.
*For more info on the metric system, check out the article called History of the Metric System at Metric! Metric!; A Brief History of Measurement Systems (PDF located at standards.nasa.gov); Wikipedia article History of the metric system

a follow-up to my previously published article Imagine my disappointment...
Many of you are aware I was interviewed several months ago by Affaire de Coeur magazine. That fell through, as detailed in the aforementioned article.
At least, I thought it had...

screencap of cover from AdC's site
Imagine my surprise when blogger informed me I had a comment awaiting moderation. (Comments left on posts over one month old must be moderated before they can be posted to the blog, as per my settings.) A lady associated with AdC took the time to comment, assuring me that my interview couldn't go into the previously promised Jan/Feb issue (she apologized for that) but was instead published in the Mar/Apr issue. She also made a point to reassure me that TJ MacKay (interviewer and writer of the clean romances article that appeared in the Jan/Feb issue of AdC) did indeed receive credit for the interview. This is a relief to me, though I can't imagine why they'd have taken credit from her for the articles that appeared in the Jan/Feb issue of the magazine in the first place.
Ah well. All's well that ends well, right? I ordered a print copy of the magazine and I now await its arrival. I'm nervous about it, not entirely sure what to expect. While I realize (and accept) that articles can get dropped from magazines, or pushed back to a later issue, I just don't understand not giving credit where credit is due.
So again, I'd like to thank TJ MacKay for all her hard work and effort. And thank you to Pam of AdC for taking the time to contact me and let me know the interview was published. ♥

My 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue defines a Locksmith's Daughter simply as a key.
I know there's more to it than this but that was all the inspiration I needed to pen a short story titled The Locksmith's Daughter. It's a contemporary romance, a first for me. Can't say I'll ever do it again, but it was fun to write at the time. (Contemporary just isn't my thing.) I plan to list this short for sale, eventually, as a $0.99 download. At the moment, it's far less than 5000 words and I think I'd like to add a bit to it before releasing it.
Happy reading, writing, and blogging!!

I don't really have anything to say at the moment. I just wanted to assure everyone in bloggerworld that I am still around. I've been distracted. A little bummed, perhaps, but mostly distracted.
Watch for a new Regency Wednesday post this coming Wednesday. It's short and for that I apologize. But I've neglected my blogging for long enough. I need to get back to my weekly posts, even if they're just quick tidbits here and there.

Several months ago I was interviewed for an article scheduled to appear in the Jan/Feb issue of Affaire de Coeur Magazine. Due to some technical issues, the magazine failed to go to print on time and has just been released.
Before I was even able to grab a copy for myself, I was informed that the interview with me was dropped from the issue. I was surprised, especially since the Jan 2012 AdC newsletter indicated my interview would be in the Jan/Feb issue of AdC. It was further disappointing to discover that TJ MacKay, the writer who researched and wrote the article and the related author interviews, was not credited for all her hard work and effort. I don't know anything about the magazine industry so perhaps all of this is common practice. If so, it's a rather disappointing discovery for me.
I'm bummed (and confused), let me tell you, but the article about the rising popularity of clean romance is still there, as well as the interview with Marcia Lynn McClure (an inspiration to any clean romance writer) and I guess that's something, especially for those of us who try to keep the graphic sexual details out of the romance.
I am deeply grateful to TJ MacKay for all her hard work on behalf of me and clean romance writers everywhere. TJ, you are truly an inspiration. ♥

Sweet, to me, implies a certain lightness to the story. I sometimes refer to it as fluffy, though not everyone considers that a positive thing. I don't think it's a bad thing, just a different type of story. There's nothing too traumatic happening and definitely nothing graphic. Very little profanity or violence, if any.
Traditional romance I typically consider any romance that leaves the sexual details to the imagination, regardless of genre. That most traditional romances are also sweet isn't much of a coincidence; they go hand-in-hand, for the most part. However, I've read a few (and written a few) that leave out the sex (or at least the details) but touch on subjects that make your stomach clench. Hard to refer to stories like that as sweet.
Then there's clean romance which I pretty much consider the same as traditional. I've noticed some are offended by the term clean, however, as they believe it implies sexually detailed romances are then dirty. To each his own. I call mine clean because the sexual details aren't there but sweet they are not.
The only difference I see is in each person's opinion. I view clean, sweet, and traditional in much the same light. But when the storyline gets into rough territory, I have a hard time calling it sweet.
There's a discussion on this subject in the Clean Romances group on Goodreads. (Funny, since I actually wrote this blog post back in December '11 and never published it.)
Then there are the differing views on "clean" in general. How much detail is too much detail before it's left the realm of clean and turned into something else? But that's another blog post entirely. lol
This is all just my own opinion and I'm sure not everyone would agree. So tell me, what do you think?

I am a bad, bad blogger. How can I let more than a month pass between posts? Typical, though, when life gets extra busy.
Writing
I've been writing short stories and editing on Heartless, two things that take up a lot of time. I hope to post a new short story soon but in the meantime, there is another installment of My Lady Coward over on my website. www.jaimeygrant.com (Click the Coward cover and then scroll to the bottom to find Part 7.)
Covers
I still design book covers. If you're in the market for a great, eye-catching design, please check out my cover design site: www.anauthorsart.com In fact, I just bought a new computer with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive so the cover designing isn't such a slow, slow, SLOW process. (My old computer only had 3GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive...not that the hard drive size has all that much to do with the slowness of the computer but now I have tons of space to save all those wondrous covers.) I'm still in the process of transferring programs, book files, fonts, and all that lovely stuff. That's time-consuming and just a bit irritating. Still, it will be done soon and I'll be back to cranking out some fabulous covers!
I think that's all the updates I have for now. I wish everyone a safe, productive, lovely weekend! ♥

(I suspect my love affair with the darker of clean romances was the greatest influence on my own darker Regency offerings. ☺)

Gothic Intrigue
"There are two courses open to a gentlewoman when she finds herself in penurious circumstances," my Aunt Adelaide had said. "One is to marry, and the other to find a post in keeping with her gentility."Thus begins Mistress of Mellyn by the fabulous Victoria Holt. I've been a longtime fan of Gothic romances and Victoria Holt (Eleanor Hibbert) was a Queen of Gothic Romance. My favorite is On the Night of the Seventh Moon but The Spring of the Tiger comes in a very close second. The twists and non-formulaic storylines in these two books are just amazing. If you haven't read them, I strongly encourage you to do so. All of VH's books are totally clean, if sexual details in romances are something that bother you.

Hello again, faithful readers! How goes life at your end? Here, things are crazy and a recent bout of [mild] illness took me out of the game all weekend. I'm still feeling the aftereffects and working at a snail's pace because of it.
In Heartless news, the edit continues apace. OK, that's not true at all. I'm still stuck in chapter five, which, if you're following my Heartless blog, you'll know contained a huge info dump. I'm trying to rectify that HUGE faux pas. Rewriting an entire chapter, for some reason, is especially time-consuming. Oh well. The story will be the better for it.
In cover news, I've got orders coming out my ears. Never thought I'd get this busy but, there it is. I may have to cut back a little on accepting clients. I have a few regulars who I will always have time for but I have a tendency to take on more than I can handle. This cuts into writing time and hubby was very clear where my focus needs to be. Love that man!
In other cover news, there are changes on the horizon for An Author's Art and I think the first will be a website facelift. Fun! I'm also in the negotiating stage with another designer to be a part of her design company. Yay!
In writing news, there's not much to tell. I've been so busy with family, covers, and editing that actual writing has taken just a bit of a backseat. I have current WIPs open on my laptop at any given moment, just in case inspiration demands I add to them.
So what's new with you?
