| I adore Carlos Ruiz Zafon's writing, and the only reason on earth that I stuck with this book for so long is that his work is simply too good to abandon. And just to give you an idea of what I mean, it took me over three years to finish this book. No...more | |

Superbia is a bit like an old fashioned amusement ride that dares you to sit back and take a tour of the dark side of police work--and of the human race itself. While much of the ride is amusing, you won't forget that this is a horror-themed ride...

“Listen, Stephen King used to write in the washroom of his trailer after his kids went to sleep. Harlan Ellison wrote in the stall of a bathroom of his barracks during boot camp. Elmore Leonard got up at 5 AM every morning to write before work.
Every time my alarm goes off at 5 AM and I don’t want to get up, or I would rather sit down after work and play a videogame, I think about those guys. Take care of your family. They need you and love you. Make time for them. Then stop screwing around and finish your damn book.”

“My book is extremely graphic. I make no apologies for it. But it is graphic only because I told the truth about what the Ripper did to his victims.”

“Bill Thompson edited ‘Whitechapel,’ and his first question to me was, “Why in God’s name do you want to bring down Superman?” And my answer was, and remains, by breaking down Holmes as this untouchable machine, it gives him the chance to become the hero we need him to be.”

“My mom worked as a hairdresser at the Village Mall in Horsham Township when I was a little kid. There was a movie theater in the mall that showed second-run features, and I have clear memories of being around five years old and walking through the mall by myself to go watch Star Wars. I believe I saw it in that theater twenty-one times. The research definitely began then.
Actually, it began even earlier. Before I was born, my father conspired with my uncle to name me Wyatt, after Wyatt Earp. There was an election held by putting names into a hat, and whatever name was drawn would be the winner. Uncle Billy distracted the people in attendance while my dad rigged the hat so that every name inside read Wyatt. My mom was horrified at the result, but eventually uncovered their ruse.
The research was really just me referring to things I already knew from the life I’ve lived. You either hear the music of the open range and a man with two six-shooters or you don’t. You either look out at the stars and wonder what lies beyond them or…I don’t know what you are…someone who loves Nicholas Sparks books.”

Very nice to be included among your friends, Bernard. Your work looks truly interesting and I hope to get to take a closer look one day when I'm not so far behind.Meanwhile, I also hope you'll consider my spiritual allegory, Song of George: Portrait of an Unlikely Holy Man. It's fiction (and experimental), but is inspired by events from my own life. Best wishes to you. Namaste, jesse
