At the end of Macmillan's premiership, Lord Home emerged from secret consultations as leader of the party (Rab Butler had been the expected successor). He disclaimed his peerage, an option first available in that year, and became prime minister as Sir Alec Douglas-Home. The Conservatives lost the election of 1964, and in 1965 Douglas-Home resigned as leader of the party.]]>

<![CDATA[David Lloyd George was a Liberal politician and prime minister from 1916-22. By the end of 1916 there was discontent with Asquith's management of the war, and Lloyd George schemed secretly with the Conservatives in the coalition government to take his place as prime minister. The main post-war issue was Ireland, where Lloyd George brought to a partial end the long-running problem of Home Rule by giving independence in 1921 to the Irish Free State. Conservative discontent with the coalition came to a head at a famous meeting at the Carlton Club in 1922, and there was an easy Conservative victory in that year's election. Lloyd George never again held office.]]>

<![CDATA[Harold Wilson was a Labour politician, and prime minister twice -- from 1964-70 and again from 1974-76. Wilson held out the promise of technology and of 'the Britain that is going to be forged in the white heat of this revolution'. A balance of payments crisis, leading to devaluation in 1967, frustrated the fulfillment of his promises; and Britain's economic difficulties were underlined by nearly four years of the most stringent exchange controls. Meanwhile, the issue of Rhodesia, in which Wilson took a personal initiative in diplomacy with Ian Smith but failed to make any progress, dominated foreign affairs. He lost the 1970 election, but returned to power in February 1974 without an overall majority; a second election in that year gave him a slender majority. He then surprised the nation, early in 1976, by the sudden announcement of his resignation.]]>
