Race, injustice, and serial murder in the Deep South—Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil with an investigative edge.

"The crime happens, the mob gathers. Far too often, the question is, which nigger's neck are we going to put the noose around?"—Gary Parker, former defense lawyer for Carlton Gary

Over the course of eight bloody months in the 1970s, a serial rapist and murderer terrorized Columbus, Georgia, killing seven elderly white women by strangling them in their beds. In 1986, eight years after the last murder, an African American, Carlton Gary, was convicted and sentenced to death. Though many in the city doubt his guilt, he remains on death row.

Award-winning Vanity Fair reporter David Rose has followed this case for a decade in an investigation that led him to the Big Eddy Club—an all-white, members-only club in Columbus, frequented by the town's most prominent judges and lawyers...as well as most of the seven murdered women. Among Rose's discoveries was that a young black man was lynched in 1912 in Columbus after he was tried for murder and freed, and that the Columbus judge to whom the Gary case was first assigned in 1984 was the son of the mob leader in the 1912 lynching.

Framed by the tale of two lynchings—one carried out illegally at the start of the twentieth century, and the other a legal lynching carried out at the century's end—The Big Eddy Club is a gripping, revealing drama, full of evocatively drawn characters, insidious institutions, and the extraordinary connections that bind past and present. The book is also a compelling, accessible, and timely exploration of race and criminal justice, not just in the context of the South but in the entire United States, as it addresses the corruption of due process as a tool of racial oppression.

Award-winning journalist David Rose argues that the camp not only constitutes a grotesque abuse of human rights but is also ineffective as a tool for combating terrorism.

Through firsthand research in Cuba, government documents, and dozens of interviews with guards, intelligence officials, military lawyers, and former detainees, Rose sheds light on Gitmo's ugly inner workings. He reveals that, contrary to the Bush administration's claims, the prisoners at Guantánamo are not "the hardest of the hard-core" Al Qaeda terrorists, ruthless men "involved in a plot to kill thousands of ordinary Americans." And he provides solid evidence that the brutal interrogations that supposedly justify the camp's existence have yielded very little useful intelligence.

Alison Hargreaves perished with five others in 1995 in a hurricane-force storm on her descent from the summit of K2, the world's second highest peak. Only 33 years old, she'd successfully scaled Everest five months earlier without the aid of oxygen--the first woman to do so. Drawing on Hargreaves's diaries and interviews with family members and acquaintances, British journalist-climbers David Rose and Ed Douglas trace her evolution from an energetic teenager who dreams of being the best female climber in the world to the person she is on her ascent of K2: a driven woman criticized in the British press for egotism and a lack of good judgment (she did, after all, climb the famously difficult Eigerwand in the Alps during the second term of pregnancy). "It eats away at me--wanting the children and wanting K2," she wrote in her journal. "I feel like I'm being pulled in two. Maybe they'd be happier if Mum was around but maybe summiting K2 would help make a better future for them."
Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and David Breashears's IMAX documentary Everest have made the travails of high-altitude climbing irresistible entertainment for outdoors enthusiasts and armchair travelers alike. But in all the stories of hubris, superhuman endurance, and courage, rarely does a woman claim the spotlight and rarely are the hard domestic realities of the climber's life explored. Regions of the Heart breaks with this tendency. The authors re-create Hargreaves's complicated career by examining her hard-working middle-class English background, her marriage to a much older man who lives vicariously through her achievements, her rejection of more practical pursuits for the rush of climbing, her persistent fear of failure, and her financial insecurity; all these factors ultimately add up to her fatal decision to climb K2 despite worsening conditions and her two young children at home. "Going on the mountain was not the difficulty for her. Mountains were the one place she felt confident about what to do. Going home meant finally resolving her relationship with [her husband] and surviving as a single mother," the authors write. Less a tale of adventure and more an honest picture of one woman's struggle for fulfillment, Regions of the Heart puts into perspective Alison Hargreaves's choice of the mountain over life. --Rebecca Wright

<div>Known as the cradle of civilization, Iraq has a diverse and complex culture that dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. Now, with the U.S.-Iraq conflict over weapons of mass destruction continuing to grow, it is increasingly important for us to seek insight and solutions to this troubled region. Inside Iraq helps make sense of this nation’s longstanding travails, detailing the past, present, and future of a place that is rich in oil and culture yet poor in leadership. Organized into three sections—History, People, and Politics—the collection includes nonfiction pieces by a distinguished roster of writers, historians, journalists, and scholars. This is an essential book for everyone seeking new levels of understanding about the place whose fate, now more than ever, has an impact on the entire world. Contributions by Tony Horwitz, Michael Kelly, Milton Viorst, Raymond Bonner, Jon Lee Anderson, Evan Thomas, Freya Stark, and many other distinguished writers are featured.</div>

When mountaineer Alison Hargreaves was killed during a violent storm on K2 in 1995, her death provided the press with a platform to criticise the morality of a woman who regularly risked her life by indulging in her passion for climbing when she was the mother of two small children. Hargreaves would have said that to give up climbing would have meant giving up herself and had previously responded to such criticism by pointing out that if she was happy with her choices then she would be a better mother. But the barrage of publicity following her untimely death seemed to rob her of her reputation as one of the most gifted and accomplished mountaineers of her generation and instead focused on her apparent disregard for her own well-being and her supposed selfishness and lack of love and respect for her children.
In fact Hargreaves' passion for climbing was equalled and indeed surpassed by her passion for her children, and her fate at the hands of K2 was a tragic irony as she believed that by climbing professionally one more time she would be able to secure the financial future of her family in the face of the impending break-up of her marriage. By drawing on Hargreaves' own diaries as well as the knowledge and recollections of the people closest to her, David Rose and Ed Douglas begin to redress the balance in Regions of The Heart. As they chart Hargreaves' life from the small child who loved walking and climbing with her parents through her teenage years when her passion was for mountains rather than boys, and her affair and subsequent marriage to a man fighting his own demons, the clear picture of a single-minded and admirable woman starts to appear.
With breathtaking descriptions of some of her greatest achievements, Regions of the Heart is a insightful, affectionate and at times disturbing biography of a woman who only really felt in control when she was pitting her wit and physical strength against the treachery of a mountain. Whether her decision to embark on that last fatal climb was right or wrong is something that will doubtless be debated long into the future. But what is clear from this well researched and intensely satisfying study of Alison Hargreaves is that she would not have had it any other way. --Susan Harrison
