I’m Deva Fagan, a writer of fantasy and science fiction for teens and tweens.

A few things I love: astronomy, tea, Dr Who, owls, fiddles, walks in the woods, bright blue flowers.

NOTE: My comments on books I've read are not meant to be critical reviews, but are just my own reactions. I don't generally use stars, but I do occasionally mark a book with five stars if it's one that feels like it will become a long-term favorite, because it's exactly my sort of book, and caters to my specific tastes as a reader. There are plenty of books I read and really admire that are clearly excellent books, but which are not so exactly "for me" that I give them five stars. I will unabashedly stop reading books I really don't care for, so if a book is on my re

The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste [MG Fantasy]

This was lovely and magical and so strongly grounded with a vivid voice and sense of place. The story of Corinne, a fearless girl who loves her home, inspired by Caribbean fairy tales from the author’s own childhood.

Jolly Foul Play by Robin Stevens [MG Mystery]

Just as charming, cozy and perilous as the previous books in the series. I love how Stevens h...

This novella is a delight! Witty and charming and clever and romantic, filled with awesome characters who defy tropes. I especially loved Cassandra, the main character, and the tragedy of her love of magic, how hard she fought for it, and the choice ...more

“Perhaps I had started to believe again in magic, or perhaps in love. Or perhaps they were the same thing.”
Deva Fagan, Fortune's Folly

“Our words were a shaky ladder; all I could do was climb, uncertain if I was about to surmount a glorious peak or fall and smash myself on the rocks below.”
Deva Fagan, The Magical Misadventures of Prunella Bogthistle

“TO BE HOPEFUL in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.”
Howard Zinn

“I heard the universe as an oratorio sung by a master choir of stars, accompanied by the orchestra of the planets and the percussion of satellites and moons. The aria they performed was a song to break the heart, full of tragic dissonance and deferred hope, and yet somewhere beneath it all was a piercing refrain of glory, glory, glory. And I sensed that not only the grand movements of the cosmos, but everything that had happened in my life, was a part of that song. Even the hurts that seemed most senseless, the mistakes I would have done anything to erase--nothing could make those things good, but good could still come out of them all the same, and in the end the oratorio would be no less beautiful for it.”
R.J. Anderson, Ultraviolet
