A must-have volume for all Beatles fans—a career-spanning selection of writings about the Fab Four

There are, of course, many books on the Beatles, but this is the only one available that is a comprehensive, career-spanning collection of journalism about the legendary band, before and after the breakup. Consisting of more than fifty articles, essays, interviews, record and movie reviews, poems, and book excerpts—many of them rare and hard to find—Read the Beatles is an unprecedented compilation that follows the arc of the Fab Four's iconic and idiosyncratic career, from their early days in Liverpool through their tragic and triumphant histories after the group's split.
The book also includes original essays from noted musicians and journalists about the Beatles' lasting influence and why they still matter today.

For more than three decades, Bruce Springsteen's ability to express in words and music the deepest hopes, fears, loves, and sorrows of average Americans has made him a hero to his millions of devoted fans. Racing in the Street is the first comprehensive collection of writings about Springsteen, featuring the most insightful, revealing, famous, and infamous articles, interviews, reviews, and other writings. This nostalgic journey through the career of a rock-'n'-roll legend chronicles every album and each stage of Springsteen's career. It's all here—Dave Marsh's Rolling Stone review of Springsteen's ten sold-out Bottom Line shows in 1975 in New York City, Jay Cocks's and Maureen Orth's dueling Time and Newsweek cover stories, George Will's gross misinterpretation of Springsteen's message on his Born in the USA tour, and Will Percy's 1999 interview for Double Take, plus much, much more.

Rock has dominated radio, TV, movies, and even the Internet in our media-savvy lives, but its impact on the literary world has often been overlooked. This collection features today's finest writers, including Sherman Alexie, Madison Smartt Bell, T.C. Boyle, Don DeLillo, Roddy Doyle, Nick Hornby, Rick Moody, Tom Perrotta, Salman Rushdie, and Scott Spencer, as well as such up-and-coming writers as Tom Piazza and even musicians such as Steve Earle who have turned their talent for lyric writing to spinning a well-told yarn. In these short stories and excerpts from novels, the reader will recognize such familiar rock icons as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Sherman Alexie's "Reservation Blues" follows the rowdy adventures of an all-Native American rock band from the reservation to New York City. In "Ground Beneath Her Feet," Salman Rushdie offers a riff on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth in a rock-and-roll setting. Scott Spencer's "Rich Man's Table" focuses on the illegitimate offspring of a Dylan-like singer and a former Greenwich Village hippie. At times raucous, at times poignant, the stories in this collection celebrate in their own way the timeless spirit that is the heart of rock and roll.

Celtic music means many things to many people. To some it recalls the Irish rebel songs of the Clancy Brothers, to others the ensemble playing of the Chieftains or Enya's ethereal vocals. Yet Celtic music is much more than reels, jigs, and sentimental ballads. It is also unaccompanied singing, feverish fiddle tunes, the sweet strains of the Irish uileann pipes. It comes not just from Ireland and Scotland but from Wales, Brittany, the Isle of Man, and Cornwall. It informs the musical roots of Van Morrison and U2, the performances of Riverdance, and the scores for such films as Braveheart and Titanic. Celtic Music explores all aspects of this music-from its roots to the exciting developments on the contemporary scene. Sawyers profiles hundreds of artists, and compiles suggestions for recommended listening as well as the one hundred essential Celtic recordings. Lists of Celtic festivals and publications are also included, together with record outlets, record labels, and music schools, making this book essential for all lovers of the music.

Best known for his fiction writing, Robert Louis Stevenson was also an essayist, journalist, poet and travel writer. His first major work was An Inlan d Voyage, an account of his journey by canoe from Antwerp to northern France. The companion work to this, Travels with a Donkey in the C vennes (1879), is widely regarded as a travel-writing classic. Skinner Sawyers has brought together the most comprehensive and representative sampling of Robert Louis Stevenson's prolific travel output, including excerpts from his most famous travel books, travel essays and travel poetry. The result is a collection that is as vivid and compelling as his fiction, with a number of previously unpublished works from US collections. There are endlessly fascinating portraits of flesh-and-blood human beings, and it becomes apparent that he never grew tired of meeting new people, or of seeking new adventures. The story-teller always finds stories to tell and Stevenson was a consummate storyteller. In the tranquility of a French pine forest by moonlight he considers the importance of friendship; in a leper colony on Hawaii he reflects on physical horror and moral beauty; in all of his writing there is humanity and compasssion.

Named the top shopping destination in the United Kingdom outside of London, “Glasgow is a must-see destination…a mandatory stop on everyone’s European travel itinerary” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) and Edinburgh has long been considered one of the most hospitable cities in Europe. This book has eleven walks–seven in Edinburgh and four in Glasgow–taking shoppers to the most charming and unique stores in both cities, which are less than an hour away from each other by train.

The shops included offer cashmere, hats, shoes, books, handcrafted soaps and natural botanicals inspired by Scotland (Treasure Island is a heady mix of musk, lemon, and cinnamon inspired by the Robert Louise Stevenson classic), single malt whiskies, purses, the best of British home design, and jewelry using Scottish gemstones. There are shops that specialize in traditional foods (farmhouse cheeses, toffee, shortbread, and lemon curd). There’s a “glorious mess of an antique shop,” a “kilt maker for the 21st century” who uses fabrics that range from denim to leather and whose customers include Sean Connery, and many more establishments, both new and historic.

Old businesses aren’t included simply for being old, but for continuing to offer goods of beauty and quality; new businesses are chosen because they operate in an old-fashioned way, with an emphasis on service and craftsmanship. Some are elegant and refined, some offer on quirky twists on classic themes, but each is stylish and without pretense. One shop owner says her boutique attracts the “discerning and determinedly different.”

The guide also includes restaurants, pubs, and cafés along the walks, and has an entire section devoted to the stunning tearooms of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Edinburgh farmer’s market.

Sumptuous color photos throughout give a sneak preview of the shops and their offerings, and the address, phone number, opening days and hours, and website of each establishment are included for extra convenience.
