I use Grammarly‘s plagiarism checker because “a little bird told me” no longer cuts it.

Dragon,  Robot, Gatorbunny

PICK ONE, DRAW IT, MAKE IT FUNNY!

My new Drawing/Doodling/Poetry Activity Book from Chronicle Books is now available as an ebook.
The incredible digital team at Chronicle did such a fantastic job!
The book was made with Apple’s brand-new platform called iBooks Author.
It’s available for download on your iPad with iBooks or on your computer with iTunes.
Check it out at the ibookstore: http://budurl.com/DragonRobotEbook
This is the description of the ebook from the publisher:

A book for doodling, drawing, and laughing! Featuring the inimitably humorous art of Calef Brown and a wonderful menagerie to stretch and inspire your artistic talent and imagination alike! The multi-touch format allows users to draw directly onto and alongside the designs included. Create over and over again and enjoy wildly inventive fun for artists aged 5 to 105.

The book begins with what inspired it – the drawings of snails that I do when visiting schools, and seeing the excitement of kids, some as young as 4, as they create their own spin-off snail creatures.
Some of the pages have prompts,  some are more open-ended,
and most incorporate some rhyming or short poems into the prompts or descriptions.
I hope kids will play around with language as well as art for their creations.
The reader can draw right in the ebook with his/her finger, or with a stylus.
It’s so much fun, I’ve been playing with it for the last few days. here are a few screen shots:

Jack Haunted

This is my take on Samurai Jack and Aku for the Cartoon Network 20th Anniversary Book and Exhibition

at Comic Con this summer. This project is being put together by Mark Murphy,

curator, designer and art empresario extrodinario.

It features an incredible line-up of international artists, each interpreting a Cartoon Network show.

I’m very excited to be part of the first show at the new Wonderground Gallery at Downtown Disney

near Disneyland. I was commissioned by Disney/Pixar to create three original paintings

– two inspired by the Pixar films Cars and Finding Nemo, and one that features Mickey Mouse.

I’m especially fond of Steamboat Willie – the first animated cartoon in which Mickey appears,

and I decided to have him piloting a different mode of transport.

The title is Copter Mickey

Here’s Nemo and The Tank Gang:

The third painting  is inspired by Cars, a portrait of Lightning McQueen.

There will also be signed giclees of all three pieces available.

They did a beautiful job, the prints are sweet.

I got a big package of them to sign last weekend:

I also created a one-of-a-kind  Lightning McQueen inspired Vinylmation platform

that I will post images of after the 9th.

More information about the gallery and opening here.

This is a poster that I created for The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program.

The Teaching Tolerance program is working to foster school environments that are inclusive and nurturing – classrooms where equality and justice are not just taught, but lived. The program points to the future, helping teachers prepare a new generation to live in a diverse world.

The quote that I was asked to illustrate is:

Today we have gathered and see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as People. Now our minds are one.

–Adapted from the Mohawk by John Stokes and David Kanawahienton Benedict

I love illustrating maps. This was a fun and colorful one to paint for Travel and Leisure. The article deals with the ups and downsides to purchasing land , the best spots, and stories of those who have moved there. Click for a larger view.
