Now in its fourth edition, this widely used and superior alternative to traditional criminal justice books continues both effectively and clearly to debunk myths cited in the popular literature regarding the problems of criminality in the U.S. It serves as a solid foundation for readers to probe beneath popular notions of crime, criminals, and crime control. Each well-written chapter provides a distinct avenue for exploring misconceptions about specific crimes or particular aspects of the system. Kappeler and Potter's provocative examination of the realities of crime and justice is a must read for anyone serious about crime, criminal justice, or criminology.

This refreshing, illuminating volume offers students of crime and justice an innovative alternative to traditional criminal justice texts. Each of the authoritative, well-written chapters questions our most basic assumptions of crime and justice, covering relevant issues such as juvenile crime, the death penalty, and serial murder. Each crime problem is carefully traced from its creation to society's integration of a myth into popular thinking and eventually social policy. Refined through two best-selling editions, the Third Edition continues to offer broad applications in the classroom. Its provocative viewpoints challenge habitual perspectives, thus making this text an excellent starting point for understanding the realities of criminal justice and an engaging alternative to reinforcing crime myths.

This intriguing collection of articles explores the many actors, practices, and techniques involved in constructing the social reality of crime. The first section offers an overview of the issues associated with studying crime and the media. The next section explores the making of crime problems from gang rituals to less mature constructions of crime like road warriors. The final section looks at the effects of media constructions of crime. The frames through which crime is projected increase fear and shape perceptions of the amount of crime committed, the types of crime, who commits crimes, and what crimes are social problems. Sensational and violent crimes are featured prominently in the media, exaggerating the risks faced by the public and reinforcing stereotypes about who commits crime and why. While the media are instrumental in defining the terms through which we think about crime, informed audiences can decide how to interpret crime news by asking questions such as: Who supplied the information? Do they have a vested interest in how we react? Who benefits from the presentation? Who is harmed? The articles in this collection provide roadmaps to navigate through filtered information to an informed analysis.

A much-needed, well-researched overview of the phenomena of organized crime in the U.S. For half a century, law enforcement agencies have pursued and prosecuted organized criminals. We have established professional, well-funded agencies to investigate organized crime. We spend billions on "closing the borders" to the drug trade, "stinging" labor racketeers, and auditing tax returns of gamblers, yet organized crime continues to conduct business-as-usual. Despite the time, effort, and money expended, basic questions remain. What is organized crime? How much empirically verified information do we have? How much data is based on unfounded assumptions? How much depends on a criminal justice policy based on conspiracy and ethnic myth? If the model used to define the characteristics and activities of organized crime is flawed, the policies derived from that model will be similarly flawed. This book presents a detailed investigation of the organization and delivery of a wide spectrum of illegal goods and services in Morrisburg (a pseudonym for a city in a mid-Atlantic state). The model suggested is based on a simple truth: criminal enterprises come into existence, profit, and flourish because there is strong public demand for the goods and services they offer. The impetus behind organized crime is not a criminal conspiracy but simple market opportunity. The market constrains organized crime's structure, form and social perniciousness. The market and its environment are thus the most appropriate points of intervention in controlling organized crime.
