Cat Grant's Blog: Memoirs of an Amnesiac

January 19, 2014

It's Sunday afternoon, and I'm sitting here in my jammies contemplating the final pages of LA Witt's and my rock star novel. Why are endings always so damn hard?

Beginnings are hard too. I've decided 2014's going to be my "begin as you mean to go on" year. Which means re-evaluating a lot of stuff.

Numero uno? My marketing strategy. In the (close to) six years since I was first published, I've tried pretty much everything--paid advertising, blog tours and giveaways, blog hops, etc. And frankly, none of it has really worked.

So, in this brand-spankin'-new year of 2014, I'm going to try a new marketing strategy, which is. . .

WRITE MORE. PUBLISH MORE.

Simple, right?

'Cuz the only real uptick I ever notice in my backlist sales is when I have a new release. So obviously I need new releases more often!

Last year I released seven books, all but one of them self-published--and the self-pub stuff was a much bigger success than my last two or three e-published books.

That's right--the Courtland books, originally published from 2008-09, are paying my bills these days. There's a lesson in that, I think.

Keep your backlist in print, even if you have to do it yourself.

Especially if you have to do it yourself. IMO, every author should self-pub at least one book, just for the experience. Nothing gives me a bigger boost than knowing I have full control over my work.

 photo Guarded_400x600_zps710f107e.jpg

So, write more. Send my new stuff to Samhain, self-pub my backlist and a few special side projects, including Lori's and my rock star book, Guarded. Stop worrying about blog tours and giveaways--they used to be a fun, unique way to bring attention to your work, but now Facebook and Twitter are clogged with them. Hard to set yourself apart from the crowd when the crowd's doing the same damn thing.

I'll still be hanging out on Facebook (mostly) and Twitter (sometimes). I'll still be maintaining my blog and website. Sending out newsletters a few times a year. As for conferences, I'm already signed up for Rainbow Con and RT, and I plan to sign up for GRL when the time comes. (I should also try to be a little less tired at these things, but jet lag's a bitch for an arthritic old lady like me.)

So, I'll still be out there, just not as much as before. After thirty-odd books, I deserve a break from the endless grind of self-promotion. Time to let my front list drive my backlist, and see what happens. :)

Happy Release Day, boys! Go out into the world and CONQUER!

 photo 305b1c3d-ccc2-4625-bfea-162af77cdbba_zpsec4f480a.jpg

Bravery is being the only one who knows you're afraid.

When Navy SEAL training pushed Lieutenant Josh Walker to his limit, Chief David Flint’s stern heart-to-heart—more like boot-to-ass—helped Josh realize his potential. When the holidays found them alone together and sharing a mutual attraction, they couldn’t help breaking a few regulations. And nearly breaking some furniture in the process.

Years after their short-lived fling, Senior Chief Flint returns to SEAL duty and finds himself under the command of the man he’s never been able to forget: Lieutenant Commander Walker. And Josh hasn’t forgotten David, either. Rules be damned, they can’t keep their hands off each other.

Despite their discretion, another SEAL catches on and threatens to expose their relationship, forcing Josh to bend to a blackmailer’s demands to avoid strife within the team just before a dangerous mission. David is the last man he can confide in…and the first to pick up on Josh’s tightly screwed-down stress.

When a life-or-death decision calls Josh’s leadership into question, coming clean could cost him what he values most. His coveted trident…and the man he loves.

WARNING: Contains a pair of Navy SEALs who don’t like playing by the rules, scorching-hot sex between two Alphas who like to be in charge, cursing as only Navy men can curse, lots of camouflage and badassery in the wilds of North Korea, and enough emotion to sink a battleship.

Available today from Amazon and direct from Samhain Publishing.

I thought The Only One Who Knows would be my first new book of 2014, but my formatter spirited this little gem back to me today!

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the OTHER book of mine that finaled for the 2012 EPIC Award in Erotica (albeit under its original title, Entangled Trio). Hot menage/femdom action set against the exciting, emotional backdrop of the world of opera . . .

 photo Habanera_400x600_zps3c1e0ff2.jpg

Colette DuPlessis is the woman every man wants, with a voice that has catapulted her to an acclaimed career as an operatic mezzo-soprano. For now, she chooses to bestow her favors on her sexy co-star, tenor David Lewis. But that will all end when the final curtain falls and she returns to Paris—and her husband and Master, conductor Aleksandr Petrovsky. But when Colette tries to say au revoir to her American lover, he goes down on his knees to declare his devotion—and to prove he can offer her something her Dominant husband never could.

Colette flees from the feelings that dominating David inspire in her, but when they’re thrust together for another show, it’s hard to bury the mutual passion still simmering just beneath the surface. When Aleks witnesses their onstage sizzle, his own passions begin to stir, and he makes his wife a startling proposal: That they seduce and dominate the handsome young tenor together. The three of them explore the depths of sex and power—pain and pleasure—but the price of their passions could be high as egos clash and hearts entangle.

Available NOW on Kindle, Nook, Smashwords and All Romance ebooks.

2013 turned out to be a year of transitions for me. My first year self-publishing. My first collaborations with co-author LA Witt. My first sales - both co-written and solo - to my dream publisher, Samhain. Moving house for the first time in nearly twenty years.

Ch-ch-ch-chaaaaaaanges. :)

 photo OnlyOneWhoMatters-The72lg_zps1d6ff20e.jpg

Let's see, what all did I do this year? Published seven books (Courtland Chronicles 1-5, Black Dog and Flawless), wrote four (Lori's and my two Navy SEAL books, 3/4th's of our rock star book Guarded, and Takedown, the second Bannon's Gym book) and have four already scheduled for 2014 publication. I saw my new favorite band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, two nights in a row. Attended two cons - Authors After Dark and GayRomLit. Sold my previously self-pubbed Bannon's Gym series to Samhain. Geez, no wonder I'm tired!

Oh, and the happiest moment of my New Year's Eve? Reviews by Jessewave awarding The Only One Who Matters 5 stars and Desert Island Keeper status! First time ever for this author! *happy dance*

My goal for 2014? To build on these new foundations and grow them bigger and higher. Lori and I are already planning our next project, and I've got a few more ideas up my sleeve. More MMA fighters. A three-guy menage, maybe? Definitely more military guys and rock stars. The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to explore them.

Happy First Day of 2014! :)

The Only One Who Knows has made Jessewave's Top 10 Books of 2013!

"An intense, emotional love affair in the military that almost destroyed the careers of two Navy SEALs. What impressed me most was the excellent writing of Cat Grant and L.A. Witt and the accuracy of the world they created . . . the integration of their individual styles was flawless."

*high-fives LA Witt*

Available January 7th everywhere! :)

I wasn't planning to have another book out in January, but the self-publishing gods have smiled upon me in bringing you a brand new edition of my hot and kinky opera menage, Habanera. (New cover art by the amazing LC Chase.)

(This book was originally published by Ellora's Cave in 2011, with the title Entangled Trio, and finaled for the 2012 EPIC Award in Erotica!)

So, my self-publishing empire rolls along (LOL!), I have no fewer than four new titles coming from Samhain next year, and a hot and kinky rock star romance currently in progress with the AWESOME LA Witt.

C'mon, 2014! I can't wait! :)

2013 was a pretty damn good year. A year of hard work, making changes, taking chances. My Year of Getting Unstuck. :)

Last year at this time I was looking at another bout of seasonal depression. When the sun goes away for weeks on end, I tend to roll up in a ball and withdraw from the world - which means my productivity slows to nothing. It's hard to get any kind of momentum going when it feels like the sky's about to come crashing down on your head.

This year, though? Has been completely different. Maybe it's the change of scenery - I moved last July from the dingy, rundown apartment I'd lived in for 20 years to this bright, sunny new place. Every morning I get up and throw open the windows and there is light!

That, my cat and my laptop are pretty much all I need.

 photo TheArrangement_400x600_zps7ebac749.jpg

2013 marked my debut as a self-published author. I can't tell you how much I learned by trying to do it all myself. The first thing I learned is that no one does it all themselves. Cover art? Forget about it. I have no talent in that area. I tried doing my own formatting, but after hours of beating my head on my desk, I decided to farm that out too. Editing? Definitely farm that out. It'll cost you a few bucks, but this is a business like any other, and you have to spend a little to (hopefully) make a lot.

As for making a lot... well, not really. If your measure of success is the New York Times or USA TODAY best seller lists, I doubt you'll ever see my name there. But from the past July to the present, I have paid pretty much all my bills by what I've made on my self-pubbed titles. That's my measure of success, and I'll happily take it.

The next best thing that happened to me this year? Hooking up (no, not like that!) with the awesome LA Witt for a couple of hot military romances (coming early next year from Samhain) - and a super-hot, super-kinky rock star book (currently in progress). The best part about co-writing? Trying to pull the rug out from under each other every chapter. *rubs hands together* It's so much fun.

 photo 305b1c3d-ccc2-4625-bfea-162af77cdbba_zpsec4f480a.jpg

Another goal achieved this year? Signing on with Samhain Publishing. In addition to Lori's and my two military romances, they've picked up my previously self-pubbed Bannon's Gym series. Black Dog is slated for April 1st (the second year in a row I've had a book out on April Fool's Day - wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something?), with the sequel, Takedown (aka, Tom's love story) coming in July. I'm planning a third book too, which should hopefully be out by the end of the year.

And, knowing this upbeat new me, there'll probably be a few other surprises along the way. Stay tuned, and have a happy and safe New Year! :)

There's been news brewing behind the scenes here, but I couldn't talk about it until the ink was dry on the contracts. But I can now announce . . .

*drum roll*

That I have sold all three books in the Bannon's Gym series to Samhain! Yes, Black Dog, its sequel, now entitled Takedown, and an as-yet-unwritten third book.

*throws confetti*

This means that, with my two Navy SEAL books (co-written with the AWESOME LA Witt!), I should have four to five brand new releases next year!

 photo OnlyOneWhoMatters-The72lg_zps1d6ff20e.jpg

(Speaking of Navy SEALs - our first book, The Only One Who Knows hits the shelves on January 7th! You can pre-order it at Amazon, Nook, Kobo, and direct from Samhain Publishing!)

This, along with the rock star trilogy Lori and I are planning to self-publish. We're chugging along on book #1, entitled Guarded. It's one dark, kinky ride, folks, so strap in!

Black Dog has probably disappeared from all online venues by now, but it will be BACK on April 1st! (Release dates on books #2 and #3 still pending, but Takedown will be published next year.)

Oh, and keep your eyes open for a re-release on my former Ellora's Cave title, Entangled Trio, with a brand-new cover and its original title, Habanera!

Looks like 2014's going to be another great year. Many, many thanks to every single one of you who's ever bought one of my books. I treasure you more than I could ever express. :)
