Just about everything in Endora, Iowa (pop. 1,091 and dwindling) is eating Gilbert Grape, a twenty-four-year-old grocery clerk who dreams only of leaving. His enormous mother, once the town sweetheart, has been eating nonstop ever since her husband's suicide, and the floor beneath her TV chair is threatening to cave in. Gilbert's long-suffering older sister, Amy, still mourns the death of Elvis, and his knockout younger sister has become hooked on makeup, boys, and Jesus -- in that order. But the biggest event on the horizon for all the Grapes is the eighteenth birthday of Gilbert's younger brother, Arnie, who is a living miracle just for having survived so long. As the Grapes gather in Endora, a mysterious beauty glides through town on a bicycle and rides circles around Gilbert, until he begins to see a new vision of his family and himself....
With this wry portrait of small-town Iowa -- and a young man's life at the crossroads -- Peter Hedges created a classic American novel "charged with sardonic intelligence" (Washington Post Book World).

In his first novel, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, author Peter Hedges constructed a coming-of-age-in-Iowa tale around his 24-year-old title character. In An Ocean in Iowa, Hedges's second novel, he returns once again to both Iowa and the theme of growing up, but this time his hero's age is in the single digits and the issues he faces have less to do with figuring out the rest of his life than making it to his next birthday. Seven-year-old Scotty Ocean lives a middle-class life in Des Moines with his strict father, a judge, his alcoholic mother, a failed artist, and his two older sisters. "Seven is going to be my year," he announces at the beginning of the novel, but when his mother abandons the family shortly after his birthday, Scotty's life begins to fall apart. He blames himself for her leaving and determines to be better. When that doesn't bring her back, he starts acting out at school, and finally embarks on a drastic course of action in order to remain seven forever. Even as he traces Scotty's disintegration, Hedges also follows his absent mother's alcoholic despair and his rigid father's increasingly desperate attempts to maintain control. Dark as the novel's themes are, the writing is leavened by considerable humor and a remarkable eye for detail.
By setting his novel in 1969, Hedges is able to draw on the considerable turmoil of the times as the Vietnam war, the women's movement, and fundamental changes in the family changed the fabric of American life--even in the Midwest. Peter Hedges has undertaken a real challenge in writing a convincing and interesting story about a year in the life of a young child; with An Ocean in Iowa he has largely succeeded.

The biggest sale of the Sundance Film Festival, now coming from United Artists in September 2003, starring Katie Holmes, Patricia Clarkson, Oliver Platt, and Derek Luke—Pieces of April marks the directorial debut of Oscar®-nominated screenwriter, playwright, and novelist Peter Hedges (About a Boy, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, A Map of the World).
Including an original introduction and scene notes written especially for this edition, here is the complete shooting script of the poignant and funny film about a day in the life of a family trying to create new memories and make peace with the old. Set in New York City's Lower East Side on Thanksgiving Day, 21-year-old April Burns (Katie Holmes), who has never been on good terms with her mother (Patricia Clarkson), is convinced by her boyfriend (Derek Luke) to host the family dinner. While April discovers her oven is broken and seeks neighbors to help, the Burns family drives toward the city recounting April's failures. As his wife persists in undermining his plans, April's father (Oliver Platt) is determined to create an experience that will become a nice memory for the family, including April's perfect-daughter sister, younger brother, and forgetful grandmother. 20 b/w photos.

Coming from Universal Pictures in April 2002, produced by Tribeca Productions and Working Title Films. Based on Nick Hornby's popular novel, About A Boy is a comedy-drama starring Hugh Grant as Will, a rich, child-free and irresponsible Londoner in his thirties who, in search of available women, invents an imaginary son and starts attending single parent meetings. As a result of one of his liaisons, he meets Marcus, an odd 12-year-old boy with problems at school. Gradually, Will and Marcus become friends, and as Will teaches Marcus how to be a cool kid, Marcus helps Will to finally grow up. The cast also includes Toni Collette (Sixth Sense, Shaft), Rachel Weisz (The Mummy Returns, Sunshine), and Nicholas Hoult. 20 b/w photos.

In OREGON, Mike, a born-again Christian, wants to "see the world, get to know people," so he hitchhikes to Bible college in Oregon. He’s picked up by two punk rockers and in nine short scenes the three find a common language, which leads Mike to do the unthinkable. (2 men, 1 woman). Brother and sister, ANDY AND CLAIRE, are very close. Claire brings home her new boyfriend, the formidable Eddie, and over six scenes it’s a fight between Andy and Eddie for who will get Claire. (2 men, 1 woman). FOOD RELATED is a series of short sketches that all deal with, well, food. There is that alluring stalk of celery (1 man, 1 woman, 1 stalk); we find an intoxicating orange (2 men, 1 woman, 1 orange); we delight in the surprising birthday cake (1 man, 1 woman, 1 cake); we are mystified by a half-dozen eggs (2 man, 6 eggs); and a serious plate of noodles prompts an urgent plea (1 man, 1 woman, 1 plate of noodles). (FOOD RELATED can be performed by a total of 2 men and 1 woman or each sketch can be cast accordingly.) In a loving send-up of support groups, THE AGE OF PIE climaxes with an unusual and exhilarating celebration of luscious cream pies. (4 men, 4 women).
