I read this before seeing the Coen Brothers' (very faithful) movie adaptation. It's beautifully written, and the voice of Mattie Ross--funny, sharp, tough--is a terrific achievement. The only thing that kept me from a five-star review is that, near t...more

Talk about your love-it-or-hate-it books! Many find this experimental novel completely impenetrable, but I thought it was heartbreaking and riveting. The book's design, featuring inkblot-like illustrations, poetic arrangements of words on the page, a...more

Still the warmest, most likeable baseball book I've ever read. As a New Yorker who grew up with the Mets, I'll always be grateful that Angell was there to document the team's comical--and sometimes horrifying--early years.
