About this author

Chuck Wendig is a novelist, a screenwriter, and a freelance penmonkey.
He has contributed over two million words to the roleplaying game industry, and was the developer of the popular Hunter: The Vigil game line (White Wolf Game Studios / CCP).

He, along with writing partner Lance Weiler, is a fellow of the Sundance Film Festival Screenwriter's Lab (2010). Their short film, Pandemic, will show at the Sundance Film Festival 2011, and their feature film HiM is in development with producer Ted Hope.

Chuck's novel Double Dead will be out in November, 2011.

See, here's the trick: publishing is slow, but it picks up as you gain a little steam in your career. In the earlier interstitial spaces when you're playing that least exciting of games, THE WAITING GAME, just write more. Because that gives you more ammunition for your Word Cannon when the time comes that publishers say, "Hey, that other thing worked for us: what else you got?"

And, some of that work? Publish it in your own. That'll keep a trickle-or-flow of interest and income in the meantime.

In the interim of all that: travel, live life, enjoy it, have new experiences. Because you also need new stuff to write about, and Capital-L-Life will give you new things to fuel your penmonkeying.(less)

Is talent real?

I don’t know.

And for my purposes, it doesn’t matter.

In fact, I’d prefer it doesn’t exist at all.

Yesterday I wrote a ranty-panties response to that MFA creative writing teacher post — and if there’s one area of pushback to what I said, it’s that a lot of writers still believe that:

a) talent exists

and

b) talent matters.

Some of them think it matters a little, some of them think i...

The Cormorant by Chuck Wendig
"Do you ever talk to your books? I do occasionally, when I'm really into the story.

I said two things repeatedly as I read The Cormorant:
1) "Holy shit!" and
2) "You brilliant mofo."

These two phrases do not reflect particularly well on me, but let me..." Read more of this review »

You can use this book in many different ways. First, the normal way. Read it from cover to cover. You'll definitely want to do that because this baby is FULL of excellent writing advice presented in an entertaining..." Read more of this review »
More of Chuck's books…
“Here are the two states in which you may exist: person who writes, or person who does not. If you write: you are a writer. If you do not write: you are not. Aspiring is a meaningless null state that romanticizes Not Writing. It’s as ludicrous as saying, “I aspire to pick up that piece of paper that fell on the floor.” Either pick it up or don’t. I don’t want to hear about how your diaper’s full. Take it off or stop talking about it.”
Chuck Wendig

“Creativity needs time. We’re all dying. Fuck stagnation. High-five creation.”
Chuck Wendig

“Write as much as you can.
As fast as you can.
Finish your shit.
Hit your deadlines.
Try very hard not to suck.”
