A native of Los Angeles, Candace (C.L.) Talmadge moved to England at age 14, where she spent her high school years in an all-girls grammar school. She learned Shakespeare and other English literature from those who know it best. She also twice cruised the Mediterranean, visiting ancient historic sites in Algeria, Greece, Italy, Libya, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia.

C.L. returned to the U.S. to attend Bryn Mawr College, graduating in three years with an honors bachelor's degree in history. She became a professional writer in 1976, joining The Suffolk County News as associate editor.
