Jill Marie Landis's Blog

Did you ever notice that the word resolution is re-solution?
Every January I make a huge list of goals and after many many years of goal tending, I feel like I’m constantly resolving to re-solve the same old habits over and over again.
Take this year for instance. Tomorrow I’m going underground to finish up the 3rd book of the Tiki Goddess Mystery series that’s been burning up the ebook downloads and causing a stir around our little island town here in Hawaii.
I’m setting up a workplace off the beaten path in the house which means vacating the office I share with my adorable husband who is like a bulldog when it comes to keeping others at bay but it’s all right for him to interrupt me 24/7 and for some reason think that isn’t a distraction.
Enter At Your Own Risk
The office also overlooks the Tiki Port, which is the main thoroughfare for all of our great neighbors and a place of music, dance, art, and laughs. Rather than shut down the Tiki Port, I’m going to migrate upstairs.
And that’s about it. No other resolutions. Just the one solution to the task of staying on deadline. Hopefully the next time I blog it will be to announce that the book is done, deadline met, mission accomplished.
Hope all your re-solutions are successful too.
Until next time,

WILDFLOWER, originally published in 1989 and now available in e-book formats for $3.99, sweeps readers from the snow capped peaks of the Rockies to the steamy Caribbean jungle.
Dani Whittaker, a young woman forced to live her life masquerading as a boy, suddenly finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime, one that will take her from the ragged peaks of the Grand Tetons to a lush Caribbean island.
Troy Fontaine, grandson of a pirate, experienced Creole lover, woodsman, hunter, gambler and entrepreneur, cannot face the future until a dark mystery in his past has been solved. Though he denies it, he’s not the kind of man who can ignore Dani’s plight either—and certainly not after he ignites her passion and takes her virginity.
While they try to fight their desire for one another for the sake of independence, these two star crossed lovers discover that love is a force that always conquers all.
WILDFLOWER is a page turner reminiscent of the old classic historical romances where men were tall, dark, handsome and flawed and women couldn’t resist them.
WILDFLOWER is priced at $3.99 where e-books are

In the late ’90′s, which seems like a century ago now, myself and three friends–all passionate about writing and cowboys–used to take off for a lovely retreat at Rankin Ranch in the foothills of the San Joaquin Valley. The ranch was founded in 1863 and the place was perfect for Chelley Kitzmiller and I to get our historical romance writer imaginations running in high gear.
Suzanne Forster, Dorsey Kelley, Chelley and I packed up and “roughed” it on these writers’ retreats and stayed in lovely cabins, played pool in the rec room and had full on fabulous breakfasts, lunches, and dinners in the dining room presided over by the granddame, Mrs. Rankin herself.
Chelley noted author, photographer, entrepreneur and advocate for all furry creatures large and small, always spearheaded the group. Chelley is well known for saying, “I’ve got an idea….” or “I was just thinking….” and as soon as she uttered one of those phrases, we knew we were in for a wild ride.
While horseback riding around the ranch (actually it was bouncing around on saddles), we asked the rugged wranglers all manner of questions about ranching and roping and branding and horses and cattle and pigs. One evening Chelley came up with the idea for a compilation of short novellas, an anthology connected through time by heroines who inherited a ranch in the Walker Basin where the Rankin Ranch is located.
The idea for Heartbreak Ranch was born.
When one of our cadre had to decline, Chelley, Dorsey Kelley, and I were disappointed, but then Chelley’s friend, Fern Michaels said she’d toss her hat in the ring and write one of the novellas.
Fern Michaels!! New York Times Bestselling author of bestselling historical romance and women’s fiction novels. We were thrilled. Little did we know that meshing our individual writing styles could fill a novel on its own.
We divided up the story by time periods. Chelley came up with Amy Duprey, daughter of an infamous madame, Bella Duprey. Amy inherited the ranch in 1869.
My heroine, Josey Heart, owns the ranch in 1890 and low and behold, I managed to work in a handsome Hawaiian paniolo (cowboy) who arrives and soon becomes Josey’s hero.
Dorsey Kelley’s heroine, Harmony Heart’s story takes place in 1917 and Fern Michaels brings the ranch into the present day with Arabella Collins, professional gambler and hired gun.
The stories are as varied as the writers themselves. Heartbreak Ranch was originally published by Harlequin in 1997. I’m happy to announce that our Heartbreak Ranch Anthology lives again and is due to be out paperback on November 13th.
Heartbreak Ranch is more than a plot of land. It’s a legacy.

It may seem as if I’ve been slacking off this summer but in reality there has been a lot going on in my world of books.
TWO TO MANGO, Book 2 in the Tiki Goddess Mystery Series was pubbed in June by Bell Bridge Books and in August we celebrated here in Hawaii with a great party at the Tahiti Nui Bar and Restaurant. A good time was had by all and some true life Hula Maidens showed up in costume!
More big news on the publishing front is that three of my classic “old school” historical romances, DAY DREAMER, JUST ONCE, and BLUE MOON are now available in e-book formats for you to enjoy as The Runaways Series. What makes them classic “old school?” The heroes are dark and brooding, the kind of men who are flawed and not very politically correct but women fall for them anyway.
I love the look of the new covers and hope that you do too. DAY DREAMER, Book 1 of the Runaways, is on sale for $2.99 to entice you to try the series or revisit the books if you read them in paperback format.
The Runaways Series is available at all ebook venues sold and so is TWO TO MANGO…which is also available in trade paperback format too.
If you have a comment on the new wave of backlist books being made available by your favorite romance writers, please post it here.
Until next time,

Doesn't everyone love sandy sandwiches?
These little dolls are my great-nieces enjoying the 4th of July in Southern California and this photo makes me smile every time I see it, I think because it says “Fun in the Sun!” and reminds me of how much I love summer.
I have no idea why this is my favorite season and I wish it would last all year long. Tomorrow is August 1st and I’m already feeling summer slip sliding away far too fast.
Since I live in the islands, that probably makes no sense to some of you who live where it actually gets cold in the winter, but we have seasons here just like everywhere else. Winter storms bring in big winter waves. The placid bay where I love to swim in the summer churns with death defying waves on the outer reef from October until the first of June. Only those brave or crazy enough to plunge in on surfboards are in the water.
So yes, I still look forward to summer all year long, even here.
To me there’s nothing like packing up a picnic and heading for the water, be it a lake, the ocean, a river, or a pond in a park. Tuck in a few cold drinks, chips, fruit, and some sandwiches (I think the photo above illustrates just why they named them that…forget the Earl of Sandwich or the Sandwich Isles). Toss in a blanket and you’re good to go.
Get out and make some memories while the season is still in full swing. Before too long the days will be way too short and fall will creep up on you.
While you’re packing up your picnic, toss in a good book or your e-reader.
By the way, what are you reading this summer? Click on the comment button below and let me know. I’m looking for a good book.

The closet is getting cleaner but there are still too many books here and so few spaces for them.
Inspired by the History channel’s recent Hatfield and McCoys mini series, I’ve been thinking about Kentucky lately. I’d love to give away 4 autographed hardcovers of MAGNOLIA CREEK, an historical romance that’s set in Kentucky just after the Civil War.
Magnolia Creek Hardcover
Here’s a great quote that includes the plot from Dixie Herald for the American Library Association:
“Dr. Dru Talbot is eager to get home to the bride with whom he had only one night of wedded bliss before the Civil War took him away, but he soon discovers that after reports of his death, Sara took off with a Yankee. In fact, she actually returned to Magnolia Creek only one day before him with Lissybeth, her bastard baby.
“When the newspaper attacks Sara in a scathing editorial, it looks like Dru will never be able to get his medical practice off the ground unless he divorces her. Then a yellow fever epidemic strikes, and as the backwoods herbal healer from the wrong side of the creek and the handsome scion of the town’s founder work together to save lives, they realize that they still have feelings for each other.
“Readers will weep with sorrow and joy over Landis’ smart and romantic tale, which parallels Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain (1997) in its deliberate pacing and dramatization of the toll exacted on a marriage by war and class differences. My trusty and faithful sidekick, Na’omi, was home the day that I decided I had to stop procrastinating about choosing winners for the drawing for free autographed books and one Heart of Lies T-shirt. So, all the names were written on 3X5 cards and put into a basket. The cat didn’t have any trouble hopping into the basket and I didn’t have to worry about her reading the names and choosing someone she knew, but Na’omi didn’t have a way of pulling them out, unless maybe I had smeared some Fancy Feast on each card and she used her teeth, but the thought was just too yuck for me.
While I was trying to decide what to do next, I noticed I still have quite a few books taking up space here in the office so I decided to add one more winner. I waited until Steve got home and forced him into standing still long enough to close his eyes and choose seven names for book prizes and one for the T-shirt.
Na'omi trying to choose winners from 3x5 cards.
The following readers who left comments on my Jill Marie Landis blog will be notified by email but here are the autographed copy winners’ names: Becky Calvin, Edie Creel, Elize den Arend, Karen Flanagan, Wilma Frana, Adelia Hall, Rebecca Moglia. The T-shirt was won by Laurie Weil. Watch your email box for a notification to arrive.
To help lighten the load and empty the office, I’ll be having another contest next month.
Thanks to all of you who participated.

Street Scene in Kyoto Japan
We had a wonderful time traveling all over southern Japan a couple of weeks ago and now we’re home and sprucing up the place with a few little projects like varnishing lanai furniture and cleaning out the office.
Before we left I was hard at work on Two to Mango, Book 2 of the Tiki Goddess Series and things really piled up in the office. Once I finished it was time to muck out months of “stuff.” I got a new streamlined desk and have twice the room I had before and now I have drawers for storage! Whoohoo.
(Hey, it’s the little things that count, right?)
It’s time I let go of some of the copies of my previous titles that were living in the boxes stashed under the old desk. I’ll be giving away six (6) autographed copies and one (1) Heart of Lies T shirt! So what do you have to do?
Just leave me a comment below this blog. (Click on the word comment.) Let me know how long you’ve been reading my books, what your favorite kinds of Jill Marie titles are (historical, contemporary, inspirational, cozy mystery) and that’s it. If you haven’t tried one yet, let me know that too.
For those who leave comments I’ve come up with a very scientific method of choosing a winner. We’ll put all of your names in a straw hat and my neighbor will pull out six winners who will receive an autographed copy of one of my past or recent titles or the T-shirt which you can wear while shamelessly promoting me or you can wear it to bed where no one will see it. Up to you.
So start leaving those comments and the winners will be announced a week from this posting.

"In her third Irish Angel book, Landis brings readers an amazing love story that even the Civil War cannot destroy. Her characters are bigger than life, and there is always a little something extra in all her books that keeps readers turning the pages." **** RT Book Club
ABOUT HEART OF GLASS:
"I hear he's insane…holed up in there like a madman."
Kate Keene's childhood memories compel her to take her newly acquired architectural skills to a dilapidated Louisiana mansion. But when she returns to the Reconstruction era South, she's shocked to discover the man she's dreamed of for so long has become a bitter, angry recluse.
Colin Delany, the handsome older brother of her best friend, has lost all he once held dear with no nope of ever restoring Belle Fleuve mansion and plantation. Filled with spunk and determination, Kate feels it's her duty to help, so when Colin demands she roll up her drawings and get out, she refuses.
When Colin forces Kate to promise his dying sister that together they will care for his niece and nephew, she complies. Having been orphaned herself, Kate realizes she must put the children's welfare above her own, even if it means a marriage of inconvenience.
But will Colin's hovering darkness ever lift? And can Kate's persistent love and faith transform their uncertain future?
Book 3 of the Irish Angels series explores the hope of a reflection of love in a Heart of Glass.
All three books are also available in Trade Paperback. Check your bookseller or online booksellers for prices.
