You may have ideas for stories, but don't seem to write them down. Throw them up onto paper (or a napkin or your hand), no matter how messy it turns out. And then refine. And refine and refine and refine. Your story will start to take shape and go in directions you never expected.

Get in a writing group.

If you write in a 'bubble', you won't know if you're even getting a point across. A writing group becomes your groups of READERS - essential to keep you and your story moving forward.(less)

Writing out my thoughts typically wasn't therapeutic, but I found writing my thoughts into a character was very satisfying!

That's how Foley McKay, the hero of "Main & Crazy", was born. Her voice started to develop from my personal experience with anxiety & depression, and over time I was able to distill the story into a solid work of fiction.

There aren't many novels that put anxiety at the center of the story - as the motivation for the hero's decisions and actions. I wanted to fill that void, because there are so many people in this world that can relate.(less)
