I am a novelist, poet, interviewer, and blogger, with two novels currently published and one immediately forthcoming.

"The Heir of Night", the first of THE WALL OF NIGHT quartet, is available in the USA (Harper Voyager), UK, Australia and New Zealand (Orbit), The Netherlands (Luitingh)and is forthcoming in France (Calmann Levy)and Germany (Blanvalet) in 2012. Release day for the second novel in THE WALL OF NIGHT series, "The Gathering of the Lost" is 27 March in the USA, 4 April in the UK.

"The Heir of Night" won the Sir Julius Vogel Award 2011 for Best Novel and a Single Titles Reviewers' Choice Award in 2010.

"Thornspell" is published in the US by Knopf. It won the Sir Julius Vogel Award 2009 for Best Novel: Young Adult and was a Storyline...more

You may have noticed from my 'library' of listed books (so far--there are many more titles therein, but I thought I'd mainly focus on SFF initially, and even that listing is far from complete yet!) that I read a lot of speculative fiction—which is pa...more You may have noticed from my 'library' of listed books (so far--there are many more titles therein, but I thought I'd mainly focus on SFF initially, and even that listing is far from complete yet!) that I read a lot of speculative fiction—which is partly because I like it and partly because it’s something of an occupational hazard when you’re a speculative fiction author oneself: there’s the need to keep up with what’s new and with all the award lists. And then there are the interviews with other SFF writers which I do from time to time on my blog: for me it’s kind of a point of honour to actually read the books before I start asking questions. A little old fashioned perhaps, but there you have it … ;-)

But although I may primarily write SFF, it’s not the only type of book that I enjoy reading. I read widely, in fact, and last year I read Kate Grenville’s "The Idea of Perfection", which I would put in the “contemporary realism” camp. I enjoyed it very much—and was also very interested by a radio discussion of "The Lieutenant" that I heard a while back, so was pleased to acquire a copy of that book, too.

"The Lieutenant" is historical fiction and based on the true story of William Dawes, a soldier, astronomer, mathematician and linguist who was part of the First Fleet expedition to settle Australia, and founded the first astronomical observatory as part of the Sydney settlement. And according to the Author’s Note at the rear of the book: “The record he left of the language of the indigenous people of the Sydney area is the most extensive we have.”

Getting round to reading "The Lieutenant" may have taken some time but I enjoyed it immensely, not least because Grenville’s writing is such a joy to read—clear compelling prose, beautifully expressed, with wonderful characterization. But I also very much appreciated the finely drawn character portrait of Daniel Rooke (based on Dawes) and his ‘first contact’ interaction with the Cadigal people—and the way Grenville drew me, as the reader, into Rooke's choice, which is one we must all sometimes face: between what would be easiest and most convenient for ourselves and what we know to be right.

I recommend "The Lieutenant" unreservedly, particularly to those who enjoy character-driven historical fiction.(less)
