Writer, singer, editor, traveler, tequila drinker, and cat herder, Kiersten Hallie Krum avoids pen names since keeping her multiple personalities straight is hard enough work. As an undergrad, she studied English literature and European history, which means she knows a little bit about a lot of things concerning people long dead. Then she got her master’s degree in publishing and things kinda clicked for a while.

At various times, she's worked back stage for a regional theater, for a commerce newspaper in the World Trade Center, for various book publishers, and for a pharmaceutical advertising company.

Born and bred in New Jersey, she moved away once, a time still spoken about only in whispers so as not to irrevocably scar the innocent. Now

I drink.

Kidding. I don't really have an answer to this. Not because I don't get writer's block, I do. Boy. Howdy. But because I don't know how I get past it. I do a lot of mulling in my head, working out issues in a story or characterization as I go along in my regular day. I also hash it out with my critique partners who regularly save my tush in these circumstances. Ultimately though, if you just start writing, even if it's crap, the act of writing often frees up the blockage and you later realize exactly how that issue is going to get resolved.

Remember, as Nora Roberts has said, you can fix crap. You can't fix a blank page.(less)

Second, network. Join a writing group in your genre (like the Romance Writers of America). If you can't afford the large, national conferences, attend the more affordable local/regional conferences. They are invaluable for the educational, social, and professional opportunities. Don't worry so much about pitching to an agent or editor one on one. That's not to say don't do it, because pitching helps you narrow down the bones of your story. But I always do my best one on one "pitching" in the bar. Everyone has an environment in which they shine. Find yours and make the most of it.

Writing is a solitary existence, which means a network of like-minded people is crucial, not only for improving your writing but for emotional and mental health. I've been writing professionally since 2008 and networking on the local and national level at least that long and my network continues to be one of the best parts of my career.

Third, read, read, read. Read the authors you want to write like. Read the books you want to write. Make the time. You'll learn so much by reading.(less)
