If...more This is the third book by Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd that I have read, and as a plant geek and passionate gardener, I always fine these books enjoyable. My bar is high, for any plant book, and few can reach the expectation I have- these guys do. If you are a horticulturist, plant lover, or just someone who dreams of someday living in Vermont, then this book is for you.

If there is any fault, not that this is one, it would be that many of the tales told in this book, are repeated lore from their earlier books, but then again, these are true stories, and even though you may have read their earlier books, the tales are told in a different voice, with perspective of time, and often, they read as a back story to the tale told ten years ago. So I still found the book entertaining and enjoyable.

This is one of those books I kept at my bed table, and would read one chapter a night, in order to spread out the experience. If you love plants, keep a note book along with this book, for you may feel motivated to order some of the plants for your own garden or greenhouse.

Personally, I had oddest experience with this book. Look, after reading A YEAR AT NORTH HILL fifteen years ago, I had constructed a vision of my future with plants, and much of it I believed, would be modeled after these guys. But, alas, I still don't live in Vermont, but I grow the same plants, have now met many of the same people mentioned in this book, I have built my dream greenhouse- complete with an alpine stone wall along the foundation, as these gentlemen did, I have collected and grown many, if not all of the plants and cultivar's they mention, and I thought at first, this book would inspire me even more.

It didn't, but that was the odd thing. Instead, it was like reading my backstory, so even though I was less motivated after reading this book, it did prove how influencial their books are, or can be, if you allow yourself to learn from them. These are practical and real stories about real men who grow and collect real plants in their real garden. In a world where far too many garden writers over simplify or write about plants they have never grown, this book comes from a truthful and authentic place. And although my personal perspective shifted, this book became all the more interesting, because of it.

Plant lovers influence each other, so buy this book, and reread it, make lists, try new plants.(less)
