Asa Briggs, Baron Briggs (born 7 May 1921) is a British historian, one of the most respected historians who has written on the Victorian era. In particular, his trilogy, Victorian People, Victorian Cities, and Victorian Things made a lasting mark on how historians view the nineteenth century. He was made a life peer in 1976.

“دایی‌اش، ب.ف.د فیلیپس، بانکداری در زالتبومل هلند بود و کارل در طول زندگی‌اش بارها سعی کرد از او پول قرض کند و معمولا با دست خالی باز می‌گشت. مارکس معمولا در راه تریر (زادگاهش) به دیدار او می‌رفت و در همین مناسبت‌ها سری به پسردایی‌هایش، جرالد و آنتون فیلیپس، نیز می‌زد. همین دو پسردایی بودند که بعدها – در 1891 – شرکتی را تاسیس کردند که اکنون به صنایع الکترونیک فیلیپس در آیندهوون بدل شده است. می‌گویند بعدها وقتی اسلاف دو خانواده به هم رسیدند، ترکه‌ی فیلیپس به سلف مارکس گفته است: "وقتی شما راجع به سرمایه حرف می‌زدید، ما در حال ساختن آن بودیم...”
