One hundred and fifty years ago today, readers in London flocked around newsstands to get the last installment of a rare foray by Charles Dickens into historical fiction, A Tale of Two Cities, a sweeping story of the French Revolution through the personal stories of a few people, particularly the Englishman Charles Darnay and the Frenchman Sydney Carton. Sydney is a better man, but is in love with Charles' wife, whose father has been imprisoned and… Well, it all ties together.
When people...

As author/editor/dancer/lay-zoologist Michael Northrop remembered in comments to a different post, another year came and went for the author of Mudville, Mamba Point, and (now) Wake, ME. Since there was no round number, I decided not to make as big a deal out of this one as I did the last one.
But I did want to share these pics of my cake.
Mind you, after my wife made me a lovely supper yesterday with all my favorite things (dolmades, samosas, bleu cheese and pears… a rather international...

For the person who found my blog by searching for "deep purple scaletta tour 2009," I'm sorry to report that was no such thing in 2009, nor is there one planned. However, now that you mention it, that would be AWESOME. I'd love to jam with Ian and Ritchie.
So if you happen to know, or even, um, BE a member of Deep Purple, I know a few chords and all the words to this song. So just give me a call, and we can make that googler's dream come true in 2010.
It's Thanksgiving week, so here is my own "Thanks!" to everyone who read Mudville, bought it for a friend or loved one, plans to read it, or at least stopped in the bookstore and admired the cover. Thanks to my wonderful agent and first-class publisher, thoughtful editor, smart designer, attentive publicist, and everyone else over in the Knopffice. Thanks to all the librarians who put it on their shelves, teachers who shared it with their classes, and booksellers who carried it in their...

I wonder from time to time if I could have finished a novel in any other century.
I am just old enough to have written stories on a manual typewriter, slamming the carriage return at the end of each line. My mom had an electric typewriter, but I wasn't allowed to use it. My brother had a manual typewriter, and I wasn't allowed to use that, either, but did anyway. I left the caps key on because it was easier TO WRITE LIKE THIS than to find the shift key. I used white out liberally. A two page ...

I'm happy to announce that my third book, WAKE, ME, will be published in Fall 2011 by Knopf. This will be my third book with Knopf, and my third book with my terrific editor over there. Knopf has been awesome, sticking by me even though I have faithless to genre. Sports, snakes, and now…
Fungi.
Yep, fungi.
My librarian friend Brandy asked me not to use that word because it's icky. Just say mushrooms, she said. Mycological menace, perhaps. But not fungi. But I love the word. Maybe it's because I...

I watched a terrific documentary about black mambas on PBS tonight. I had to because just about every member of my family called or emailed to let me know it was on.
I wish the show had aired a year ago when I was researching Mamba Point! It's really hard to find more than basic information about mambas at the library or on the Internet, and in one hour I got it all. What mambas eat, where they live, how they hunt, how big they are, how fast they are, and how they make baby snakes.
The show...

I asked what scary children's novel featured the cover text "Time is running out for Lewis and his Uncle Jonathan…."? The answer, as a few people knew, is John Bellairs' The House with a Clock in Its Walls, the first of Lewis Barnavelt's famous gothic adventures. The next trivia question will be posted on Friday the 13th.
