Kurtis Scaletta's Blog

December 13, 2009

By now you've all seen this delightful video, since it was all over the blogosphere and the socialnetworkingasphere (is that a word?) this week. I myself can't get enough. YouTube is best at capturing these moments of everyday wonderfulness.

My goal for today is to write the way this kid plays uke and sings — purely for the joy of it, and no worries about being perfect.

Tonight I'm going to see Andrew Bird, who is possibly my favorite musician to see perform live. His recorded music is great, but you kind of have to see him live to get it. I also love puppets, so this video always makes me happy.

Mice with Spam

At about 5:10 PM yesterday I was ready to take down this website slash blog and be done with it.

No, it's not because of anything you did*. I've had a scourge of something called an injection hack, which is similar to having a house overrun with mice, only in this case the mice try to talk you into buying bootleg software or suspsicous, ah, supplements. Imagine that going on when you have company.

I've rebuilt the thing from scratch. New database, clean install of the software, clean install...

Recently Google introduced a new chat/email thing called "Wave," that was really cool for a few minutes because you had to get invited to join, which made it like one of those hot clubs you see on TV with a long line of people and a bouncer who checks to see if you're on the list. Then suddenly everybody had access to Wave, but nobody knew what to do with it, and Wave invites (to steal a joke from Kris) were the zucchini of the Interent. If you're out there in aggregation land, drop by the HQ to see my latest website flair*, at least if you've got an up-to-date non-mobile browser that doesn't block Flash and/or Javascript and supports CSS**.

*You'll only see these on the home page, near the top. Click on over and wait for it.***

**I.E., most browsers released in the last few years with default settings.

***If you've been waiting several minutes and nothing has happened, it probably isn't working.****

****In which case you'll...

Questions nobody asks but should: Who's your favorite actor slash singer?

That's a tough question, because there's a lot of people who are quite good at both, from Frank Sinatra to the unspellable Zooey Deschanel. But today I'll say Will Oldham.

Will Oldham, aka "Bonnie Prince Billy," is a terrific rootsy folk singer and songwriter whose voice sounds world weary and wise. He has written beautiful, heart-breaking songs like "Agnes Queen of Sorrow" and "I See a Darkness" and "New Partner," to...

For the guy who found this blog by googling "crazy kurtis in cooperstown," the answer is: Not yet, but your letters and phone calls to the Hall of Fame might help.
