I enjoyed your quote from "Glory Season" about the 'practical things' you'd to ask the local wizard/sorceror to come up with.It reminded me of the advanced technological contributions to 13th century Poland provided by an inadvertent time traveller in "The Cross-Time Engineer" by Leo A. Frankowski (also "A Connecticutt Yankee at King Arthur's Court" for that matter).
Have you tried ny Jack McDevitt - his stories are a bit like a cross between Clive Cussler and Jack Vance, with the emphasis on Vance.
