Patrick Middleton began writing and publishing short stories and poetry during his undergraduate college years at the University of Pittsburgh. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in English (summa cum laude) in 1984, Patrick went on to graduate school where his writing skills caught the eye of a prominent psychology professor, who invited Patrick to assist him in writing the second edition of an experimental psychology textbook. Upon completion of that project, Patrick wrote the test battery and instructor’s manual for the second and third editions of the textbook.

My writer’s block comes int he form of getting stuck with, say, a transition, the construction of a metaphor, a plot twist, the need to go back and foreshadow something and how to do it, things like that. I have an arsenal of tools that I use when I get stuck, I’ll work on a new scene, do some research, or take extensive notes, or go for a cardiovascular workout and come back with a fresh outlook, or go back and revise the previous day’s output. I think for any writer who is struggling it’s almost always helpful to use the first step in the scientific method, and that is, to simply identify the problem. You’re stuck but you’re stuck for a specific reason. Hopefully it’s not because you don’t have anything to say.(less)
