<div>Marcel Dzama has changed everything about art that involves alligators and men in bear costumes holding guns. Dzama is from Winnipeg, and his work shows frequently in New York and on Beck's album covers. Sometimes he paints with root beer. This book — it's not even a book at all, really — is an envelope with 32 loose-leaf prints good enough to frame; plus a scrapbook; plus an insert card; plus an introduction by Sarah Vowell, recently brought back into existence after a long absence — and it's a wonderfully multifaceted introduction to the work of a really amazing artist.</div>

The Course of Human History Personified, is borrowed from Dante and recalls both grandiose artistic and literary cycles from the nineteenth century such as the New York Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole s five-painting The Course of Empire of 1836, where nature plays as large a role as humans. In Dzama s art, personification has always been the main leitmotif imagined characters and trees and beasts assume base human characteristics. (Rosenfeld, Jason. An unusual, wacky, obscure and completely bizarre body of work, drawn in a 1940s influenced figurative poster style; this is the subtly off-set art of Marcel Dzama. This catalogue accompanying an exhibition at the Rizziero Arte Gallery consists of two sections – drawings on thick mat Naples yellow paper, and cartoon-like sketches (with much more text around the drawings) printed on quality mat laminated paper. Each section could be the beginning of the book (turn it over to start from the other end).

<DIV>With The Berlin Years, Marcel Dzama's visions of elegant, enigmatic bears, bats, and sexy ladies were delivered to a slumbering nation. Now, The Berliner Ensemble Thanks You All provides entirely new artwork for an eager audience. The book — actually a redesigned envelope with 28 loose-leaf prints suitable for framing — features watercolors and drawings of bats, nurses, horses, guns, girls, masks, ballerinas, cowboys and more, and shows why Dzama is sought after by such luminaries as Beck and Nick Hornby, and collected by Jim Carrey and Steve Martin. </DIV>

The comic book, the cartoon strip and the single-panel gag are recurring motifs in twentieth-century art, providing a platform for narrative, political critique, graphic clarity, and, of course, fun. Cult Fiction: Art & Comics examines the work of artists who produce comics and cartoons as part of their practice, as well as those who employ the language of the comic in their work, borrowing from stylistic sources across high and low culture. Accompanying a U.K. exhibition tour, and designed by Fantagraphics art director Jacob Covey, this catalogue's bold layout complements the artworks included in its pages. An essay by Paul Gravett, a writer and curator who has worked in comics publishing and promotion for over 20 years, illuminates the long-standing love affair between fine art and comics, emphasizing contemporary practitioners in Britain and the U.S., including Laylah Ali, Glen Baxter, Daniel Clowes, Liz Craft, R. Crumb, Adam Dant, Julie Doucet, Debbie Dreschler, Marcel Dzama, Mark Kalesniko, Kerstin Kartscher, Killoffer, Chad McCail, Paul McDevitt, Kerry James Marshall, Kim Pace, Raymond Pettibon, Olivia Plender, Jon Pylypchuk, James Pyman, Joe Sacco, David Shrigley, Posy Simmonds, Richard Slee, Carol Swain, Stephane Blanquet, Melinda Gebbie, Alan Moore and Travis Millard. Specially commissioned self-portraits and question-and-answer forms filled out by hand by all contributing artists make Cult Fiction one-of-a-kind.

Mimicking the aesthetics and texture of the famed Moleskin sketchbooks that artists have used for decades to hash out their ideas, Armpit of the Mole may very well become your new favorite drawing compilation. Forty-four artists have contributed six pages each to this book to present here their research of ideas or their depictions of various universes. Here Marcel Dzama brushes up against Michelle Naismuth, and Wim Delvoye and later blends into Florian & Michael Quistrebert, who lead to Thierry Agnone. The styles differ from distant to confrontational, formal to narrative, obsessional to nonchalant, and controversial to bucolic. Flipping through Armpit of the Mole, it feels as though someone tore pieces out of each artist's sketchbook and bound them all together. Yet, the collection of images is thought out and designed like a succession of varied and original works that are different yet connected--much like a good DJ set. Edited by Michael Quistrebert. Paperback, 6.5 x 9.25 in./288 pgs / 191 color and 75 b&w.

The Canadian art group the Royal Art Lodge, currently made up
of Marcel Dzama, Neil Farber, and Michael Dumontier, used Farber's
dining room table to create the 160 tiny (7.6cm x 8.9 cm) paintings
on wood featured in this book. The deliberately crude, almost comicbook-
like pictures, typical of this groundbreaking collective, include
vague and puzzling epigrams, exploring the dreamy and melancholic
thoughts we have about women and children-the fears, the sadness,
and the desire to protect both. A powerful essay by Guido Bartorelli
examines how The Royal Art Lodge exemplifies what Marshall McLuhan
called -low-definition- media-and how fitting its approach and affect
are in this technological age.

Published on the occasion of his fifth solo exhibition at David Zwirner gallery in New York, Even the Ghost of the Past presents new work by the influential young Canadian artist Marcel Dzama--including a DVD of original short films. A favorite among the art, literary and indie music scenes, Dzama is best known for his figurative compositions of pen and watercolor on manila-colored paper. Bearing a characteristic palette of muted browns, greys, greens and reds, Dzama's drawings are populated by an expansive cast of human, animal and hybrid characters. In recent years, Dzama has extended his practice to include work in multiple media. A recent exhibition, for example, transformed the gallery into an odeum of imagination, replete with drawings, sculptures, dioramas and films. Featuring an interview with the artist by filmmaker Spike Jonze and designed in collaboration with the artist as two hardback books twin-bound into one with a custom drawing on the cover, Even the Ghost of the Past is destined to become an instant collector's item.
Marcel Dzama was born in 1974 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. A co-founder of the Winnipeg-based Royal Art Lodge collective, he currently lives in New York City.

In exhibitions throughout the Americas and Europe, Canadian artist Marcel Dzama's quirky humor has garnered a fan club of admirers. With a grab-bag of characters representing everything from archetypal innocents to reckless perverts, Dzama's drawings present skewed views of vaguely familiar situations filched from sources like The Wizard of Oz, The Grapes of Wrath and Inuit crafts. Dimension: 10 x 13 inches, approx. 200 color reproductions.

Topping out at 416 pages, American Illustration 26 promises to deliver even more of what design professionals, artists and students desire from this influential annual juried illustration collection. Not only does the volume consistently serve up the most innovative projects from the illustration world--including previously unpublished personal work--but it is also an increasingly well designed object. Last year, the twenty-fifth anniversary edition included a never-before-seen, double-sided, die-cut, round, french fold, metallic pull-out, 30 x 30 inch poster by Yuko Shimizu and "trading cards" showcasing 25 years of covers, complete with stats for each volume--including juries, designers and winning illustrators. This year's roster includes works chosen from magazines, children's books and promotional materials by some of the top names in the field and others that you'll soon start hearing more from. A short list includes Marcel Dzama, Chris Ware, Brad Holland, Istvan Baynai, Seymour Chwast, Vivienne Flesher, Nathan Fox, Anita Kunz, John Hersey, Christoph Niemann and Christian Northeast. You'll see why the Rhode Island School of Design states unequivocally, "American Illustration is the most innovative and visually exciting overview of illustrative work available today," while the Savannah College of Art and Design enthuses, "American Illustration is American art at its best, a rare experience in enjoyment and a trip to illustration Utopia."
