Julianna Hinckley was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama - home of the US rocket program. Her NASA-employed father and the rumbling roar of rocket engines throughout her early childhood have given her a life-time love of space travel and star-gazing.

But history, culture and travel are her greatest interests. When she ran across a reference to the Sarmatians, she instantly fell in love with these nomadic peoples and the Black Sea region in which they lived during the seventh through first centuries BCE. Stories beckoned. Taminah is the first.

Nothing worked until a more experienced and multiply published author said something that unblocked me. Sadly, that was some years back, and I don't remember what she said - only that it worked. In less severe cases, where I am just stuck on a scene or on how to proceed in a section of the story, I try to put the manuscript aside for at least a week and just do and read other things. Often the solution will just pop into my head when I am doing something that doesn't require much thinking - driving, showering, walking, or perhaps as I'm falling asleep. (less)

If you're truly stuck on a scene, but know where it has to lead, skip it with a sentence saying something like, "Insert scene wherein hero does X which results in X happening" and move on. Don't let one block prevent you from continuing to write. If you happen to be working on multiple manuscripts, or perhaps are blocked in your novel, but have a short story idea, go work on the short story or other work in progress. Just keep writing. :-)(less)

“Actors in any capacity, artists of any stripe, are inspired by their curiosity, by their desire to explore all quarters of life, in light and in dark, and reflect what they find in their work. Artists instinctively want to reflect humanity, their own and each other's, in all its intermittent virtue and vitality, frailty and fallibility.”
