About this author

Reyna Grande is the author of two novels, Across a Hundred Mountains, which received a 2007 American Book Award; Dancing with Butterflies, which received a 2010 International Latino Book Award. Her new book, a memoir titled The Distance Between Us, was published on August 28, 2012 by Simon & Schuster. In it, Reyna recounts her experiences as a child left behind in Mexico when her parents emigrated to the U.S. in search of work, and her own journey to the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant at the age of nine. The L.A. Times hailed it as "the Angela's Ashes of the modern Mexican immigrant experience." Kirkus called it a "standout immigrant coming-of-age story," and Publishers Weekly said that her memoir "captivates and inspires."

Description: Here is a chapter I deleted from my memoir prior to publication which I love, but I made myself cut 30 pages from the first section of the book to maintain the pacing.
