If art is our most reliable oracle, then the future looks cool, digital, and expensive. Stephen Wilson's massive Information Arts compiles notes on and samples of the work of over 200 artists, organized loosely by scientific discipline. Artists drawing inspiration from cell cultures, GPS, robots, surveillance databases, and other technological muses receive a page or two of commentary, often including their own statements and critical reviews.
  The image selection is only adequate and often puzzling--why show a photograph of an installation meant to be experienced in total darkness, for example? Still, as a reference and resource guide, Information Arts is without parallel, especially for the largest section, covering computer-related or -aided artworks. Deep research, engaging prose, and copious listings of further information make it essential for exploring the avant. --Rob Lightner

    <div>Fascinating, essential texts on human psychology make The Book of the Mind an ideal resource for anyone who thinks about the way we think.

This imaginative collection of key writings on the human mind - which includes case notes, journals, poetry, fiction, and letters, as well as more formal writings - comprises humanity's most significant attempts to understand our own minds. Psychiatrist Stephen Wilson provides introductions to each of six sections - on perception, memory, emotion, thought, consciousness, and the self - and a linking commentary that sets each excerpt in the context. From Buddha and Aristotle to Descartes and Wittgenstein, from Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Proust, and Beckett to Freud, Jung, Klein, and Sacks, this is a superb overview of great thinkers on human thought.
</div>

    Introducing The Freud Wars addresses the chief accusations levelled against him and the oppositions o his discoveries. Is he a genius of scientific psychology or a peddler of humbug? Is he to blame for disguising serious sexual abuse? Is there an Oedipus complex or a death instinct? What do dreams reveal? Were his treatments really effective? Was he a drug addict? Did he plot murder?

Introducing the Freud Wars gets behind the demonized myth in an uncompromising investigation of the facts. Stephen Wilson, consultant psychotherapist and Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, provides a helpful guid to the war zone of psychoanalysis, dramatically illustrated by Oscar Zarate, winner of the 1994 Will Eisner Prize for graphic novels.

    Corsica is associated in many people's minds with vendetta and banditry, but these phenomena have not been studied systematically. Using accounts by visitors and officials and particularly judicial records, this book provides such a study for the nineteenth century. Accounts of specific feuds lasting over many generations are given, including that which inspired Mérimée's Colomba, and the whole phenomenon is set in its proper context of competition for scarce material resources and power in a traditional agro-pastoral society. Attitudes to death and the dead are examined, and reveal a divergence between local practice and belief and official Christianity, and the persistence of the notion that the spirit of the slain requires to be placated with blood. A general theme is the impact upon an isolated traditional society, and its system of sanctions, of incorporation into a modern state with courts and police.

The basic theory of matter on the nanoscale is quantum mechanics and the application of quantum mechanics to the study of the many-body problem in molecules and materials is a rapidly developing field of research. Frontiers in Quantum Systems defines the leading edge; hence it describes the new theoretical developments available to a wider audience and presents theories which provide, for example, new insights into the structure of increasing complex molecular systems or molecules in a variety of environments. New computational techniques and practices are accessed, exploiting the wide range of equipment available to the researcher from “leadership” class supercomputers to distributed workstations and the internet. Just as important as the development of new theories and computer algorithms are the new areas of application, the ever expanding list of application areas in which studies at the quantum level are providing valuable insights. Frontiers in Quantum Systems will allow new areas of application to be exposed to a wider audience.
